Jack Lewis family provides paintings to sell to benefit RAL scholarship fund

August 15, 2014

The Jack Lewis family has provided two of their father’s original watercolors for the Rehoboth Art League to display and sell. The sale will benefit the Jack and Dorothy Lewis Scholarship Fund.

Jack Lewis was one of Delaware’s most celebrated artists and known by many for his engaging paintings of scenery throughout Delaware. Lewis inspired many artists to explore their creativity and pursue their own artistic career. He was particularly passionate in teaching art to children who came from disadvantaged home situations. The Lewis family created the scholarship to provide free art instruction to at risk youth in Western Sussex County.

Heather Lewis, Jack’s daughter, said “The Rehoboth Art League was such an important part of my Dad’s life that we would like the sale of these paintings to help continue his legacy.” Lewis was an avid art teacher and very involved with the Rehoboth Art League. He was a participant in the annual Outdoor Show for many years. Lewis died in 2012 and in 2013 a memorial service was held at the art league with an exhibition of his work.

Both paintings are on display in the art league’s main Corkran Gallery during the Outdoor Show which continues Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 16-17. “Dockside at Sunset” was painted by Lewis in 1940 and “Baynard Hall” in 1938. Both are watercolors are on paper.

In addition, Heather’s work “Where Dreams Go” is on display and for sale in the gallery with proceeds to go to the scholarship fund. Two other exhibitions continue at the league through Sunday, Aug. 24 - the 41st Members Fine Art Exhibition and Flying in and Out of Margins: Prints and Drawings by Oscar Gillespie.

The 41st Annual Outdoor Fine Art and Fine Craft Show is open on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday. With great art, food, music and more, it promises to be a highlight of the weekend. Free parking is available at the Kmart on Route 1 and Rehoboth Elementary School at 500 Stockley St. Ext. There will be continuous shuttles all day. The $5/weekend ticket is available at the gate or in advance at ralartoutdoor.com.

This event is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
