Popular Cape Region restaurateur Matt Haley has died following a motorcycle accident in Leh, India.

Scott Kammerer, president and chief operating officer of The Matt Haley Companies, said Haley was on a "preride," a practice run on a motorcycle through the mountainous border region between Nepal and Northwest India. Haley, who was accompanied by locals familiar with the region, was struck and hit by a truck, Kammerer said. The site of the accident was a remote part of India, 18,000 feet above sea level, he said.

According to a press release, Haley, founder and CEO of The Matt Haley Companies, was on a six-week humanitarian mission that was taking him through Northwest India and Nepal. The 2014 recipient of the James Beard Humanitarian Award has done extensive work in the area since 2011.

The Matt Haley Companies currently owns or operates 25 businesses throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. They include restaurants, real estate properties, film production studios, food concessions, restaurant consulting and management as well as artisanal soda production.

Overseas, MHC is partnered in Italy producing wine and olive oil and in Nepal and Central America with growing and harvesting organic coffee.
