Mac (Steven) McKeown, local artist

August 21, 2014

Mac (Steven) McKeown, 59, of Millsboro, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2014.

Born and raised in Cape May, N.J., Mac was a commercial deep sea scallop fisherman for 23 years, fishing from Cape May up the coast into the North Atlantic. Having a passion for the ocean and the beauty it held, he gave up the dangerous occupation of commercial fishing and being very creative, became a self-taught artist and started Sea Art Studio in 1994. Mac created “Sea Tiles,” individually handmade wall tiles of sea shells and fossils. His work was sought after by many around the country who wanted something unique.

He participated in many benefit events over the years donating his artwork to many local charitable organizations. Mac never really left the sea as he spent many a day offshore fishing with a close friend. He was a very giving person always ready to help friend and neighbor in need.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Laura; their two cats May and Molly; and a large number of extended family and friends.

Services will be private. A celebration of Mac’s life will be held Friday, Aug. 29, at 4 p.m. in Gull Point where he and Laura have lived for the past 20 years.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mac’s memory to Easter Seals, 22317 DuPont Blvd., Georgetown, DE 19947.

So long and fair wind…
