Lewes man's 5th DUI takes out utility poles

August 26, 2014

Delaware State Police troopers have arrested a 50-year-old Lewes man for his fifth-offense DUI after he crashed a dump truck and took out two utility poles on Old Landing Road.

The incident occurred about 7:40 p.m., Aug. 25, as Andrew J. Trala was operating a 1999 Sterling dump truck. Police say he lost control and overturned the truck onto the grassy shoulder. A trailer that was attached to the truck also overturned, causing the paving equipment he was hauling to break free and strike the utility poles.

The crash left about 1,400 Delaware Electric Cooperative customers in the dark for about two-and-a-half hours.

Trala, who initially fled from the scene, was located at the Red Mill Inn on Coastal Highway north of Lewes and was taken into custody. He was taken to Troop 7 where a DUI investigation ensued, and he was subsequently charged with his fifth DUI. He was previously convicted of DUI Oct. 7, 1992; July 16, 1998; July 29, 2002; and May 13, 2010.

He was also charged with leaving the scene of a property damage collision, driving while suspended or revoked, driving a commercial vehicle without an endorsement, escaping contents and other traffic-related offenses. He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $9,202 cash bond.
