Vietnam vets to host dinner for Gold Star Families Sept. 20 in Dover

September 2, 2014

An evening of Honor and Remembrance will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 20, in the Rollins Center at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino.

The evening will include a sit-down dinner, the 237th Army Band, surprise musical entertainment, and keynote speaker Maj. Gen. Francis D. Vavala, Delaware National Guard adjutant general.

The event will be hosted by Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 83, New Castle, a recent recipient of the prestigious Delaware Academy of Medicine Public Health Recognition Award.

“VVA Chapter 83 vows that Gold Star Families living in Delaware will be honored for their sacrifice,” said Tom Daws, chapter president. “This will be the second annual event, and it is open to the public.”

Chapter 83 has worked with Gov. Jack Markell and Lt. Gov. Matthew Denn for six consecutive years to have a Gold Star Mothers and Families Day Proclamation; Delaware is one of the few states to do so.

Tickets are $38 and may be ordered by mailing a check and entrée selection of either a grilled chicken/crab combination or Vegetable Wellington (vegetarian) to VVA Chapter 83, Gold Star Program, PO Box 8167, Wilmington, DE 19803.

Tickets will be held at the event will call desk. Tickets will not be sold at the door, and the cutoff date to order tickets is Monday, Sept. 8.

Military will be in uniform and civilians in a suit or cocktail dress. Veteran motorcycle club members are encouraged to wear their vests.

Tax-deductible donations may be sent to VVA Chapter 83, a 501c organization, at PO Box 8167 Wilmington, DE 19803.
