Homer 'Greg' Shaner, loved being on the road
Homer “Greg” N. Shaner, 84, of Long Neck, formerly of Dover, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014 at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford.
Greg was born in Clarion County, Pa., Nov. 4, 1929, son of the late Leroy and Rosella Shaner. He was one of 10 children and lived through the Great Depression and World War II, making his life one of learned hard work, responsibility and frugality. He was a proud U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
In Greg’s early career he worked for USAC Transport and was one of the first drivers to transport missiles to Cape Canaveral. Greg retired as the director of fleet sales for Rapid Distribution after a successful career in the transportation industry. That didn’t stop him from driving trucks or being on the road. Given his love of travel, Greg drove and visited all 50 states. He had a story about every part of the country.
A man of many trades with an ambitious work ethic, Greg could fix just about anything - and did. He was an avid sports fan following University of Delaware football and his granddaughter’s basketball career. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 28 in Millsboro. Greg’s happiest times were spent with his family after his retirement. He will be forever remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend.
His family would like to extend their sincere appreciation and thanks to the nurses and staff at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford for their excellent care and kindness.
Greg is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Ruth Ann (Callaway) Shaner; daughters, Christy Dowd (John) of Long Neck, and Shelly Hostedler (Richard) of Lincoln; three grandchildren, Faith Rentz of Dover, John McMahan (Wendy) of Milford and Jamie Bancroft (Bill) of Gaithersburg, Md.; and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, Berton Shaner of Seaford, Robert Shaner of Clayton and Richard Shaner of Hinesville, Ga.; two sisters, Donna Van Wormer of Franklin, Pa. and Norma Strotman of Easton, Md.; and his four-legged companion, Molly.
A visitation will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 2, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where the funeral service will begin at 11:30 a.m. Interment with military honors will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro at 1 p.m. A celebration of life reception will be held at 2 p.m. at American Legion Post 28, 31768 Legion Road, Millsboro.
