Lewes Senior Center begins monthly yard sales
Lewes Senior Center will hold monthly yard sales the third Saturday of each month, starting May 17 and continuing through Oct. 18. Sales will take place rain or shine at the center, located at 310 Nassau Park Road, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The center invites vendors, artists and crafters to offer their wares at reasonable rental prices. Outside space is $10 or $15 with table. Inside space is $20 with table. Center members pay $10 for inside or outside space. Call 645-9293 for information or registration.

Women’s Democrat Club to meet May 15
The Sussex County Women’s Democrat Club will hold its regular monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, May 15 at Sussex Pines Country Club, Georgetown. Guest speaker is Ken McDowell, director of the Department of Elections. Members are asked to bring a friend and newcomers are always welcome. Dinner will cost $13 per person. Roadhouse to donate funds to cat society May 15
The Roadhouse Steak Joint will donate 10 percent of its proceeds to the Historic Lewes Cat Society on Thursday, May 15. Funds raised will help support the organization’s rabies clinics for cats and dogs, as well as adoptions.

Radio fundraiser to take place May 12-16
Radio station Eagle 97.7 FM will participate in a Del-A-Wish fundraiser Monday-Friday, May 12-16. Each morning at 6 a.m., the station will announce a community need in hopes of garnering services and/or funds from listeners by 6 p.m. to fulfill the “wish.” Causes the event hopes to raise funds for include a father and son who lost everything in a house fire, an elderly couple who need handicap accessibility in their home and the Greenwood fire chief who has suffered a debilitating illness, to name a few. Cutest baby contest seeks entries
Diamond State Crown Productions will present the Greater Delaware Cutest American Baby Boy or Girl Contests to benefit its youth program. Four titles will be awarded. Photos no larger than 5 x 7 inches without frames should be sent to P.O. Box 104, Harbeson, DE 19951. All photo entries should include the child’s full name, birthday and age. Parents should also include their name, phone number and address for each entry. Photos may be professional or amateur shots; copyright photographs are the responsibility of the parents. The deadline for submission is Wednesday, June 4. One male and one female will be chosen in two categories, Greater Delaware’s Cutest American Baby and Greater Delaware’s Cutest American Baby Supreme. The baby with the most donations, sponsorships or fundraising to benefit the Harbeson/Greater Delaware Pageant will be named Greater Delaware’s Cutest American Baby Boy or Girl. Those wishing to compete for the Greater Delaware’s Cutest American Baby Boy or Girl Supreme must pay a $25 entry fee. Checks should be made payable to Diamond State Crown Productions. Military officers announce May meeting
The speaker for the Tuesday, May 20 meeting of the Military Officers Association of America will be Commander James W. Barrett, U.S. Navy (retired), who will address the question, “What’s really going on in the real estate business today?” The luncheon will take place at 11:45 a.m., at La Rosa Negra, 1201 Savannah Road, Lewes. The group is a nonprofit veterans’ association dedicated to maintaining a strong national defense and to preserving the earned entitlements of members of the uniformed services and their families and survivors. Membership is open to those who hold or have ever held a warrant or commission in any service, including Public Health Services, and their surviving spouses. The next meeting will be held Sept. 16.

Gala to honor Miss Delaware 2007
The Miss Delaware Organization as well as friends and family of Brittany Dempsey, Miss Delaware 2007, invite the public to attend a gala in her honor at 7 p.m., Friday, May 16, in the mezzanine area of Dover Downs Hotel and Casino, Dover. The cost is $30 per person. The event will include hot and cold hors d’oeuvres with a cash bar available. For reservations, contact Sue Kuhling at kuhlagain@aol.com or 302-284-4278. Home of the Brave fundraiser is May 13
The Home of the Brave will host a fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, May 13, at the Roadhouse Steak Joint on Route 1. The Roadhouse will donate 10 percent of its entire daily proceeds to the Home of the Brave. These funds will be used to aid homeless veterans at the facility in Milford. Board members and staff of the Home of the Brave will greet patrons from 5 to 7 p.m.

Cavaliers East presents May Madness
Cavaliers East Restaurant and Lounge, 63 Main St., Dover, will stage a double dose of May Madness, featuring DJ Sporty, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., Saturday, May 10 and Saturday, May 24. Tickets are $10 at the door. Music will include R & B, hip-hop, soul, reggae, house, gospel and old school. Partial proceeds will support student scholarships.

Food drive to take place May 10
Local letter carriers will participate in the Stamp Out Hunger food drive Saturday, May 10, collecting items donated by postal customers. Anyone who wants to help with the drive should place nonperishable food items in non-glass containers, such as canned meats and fish, soup, juice, pasta, vegetables, cereal and rice, in a bag beside their mailbox before the mail delivery time.

Delaware Tech seeks outstanding women nominees
Nominations are being accepted for outstanding women to be recognized at the 2009 Women’s Day Celebration presented by Delaware Technical & Community College and the Owens Campus Alumni Association. The closing date for nominations is May 31. To be eligible for nomination a woman must be age 18 or older, a resident of Sussex County or the state of Delaware for at least five years, or a non-Delaware resident whose employment or volunteer work impacted Delawareans for at least five years. Honorees are selected based on their professional or career achievements, leadership and vision, service to the community, impact on Sussex County and/or the state of Delaware, and personal and/or professional obstacles overcome. Eligible candidates should demonstrate exemplary accomplishments related to one or more of these areas: arts, business, community service, education, law, medicine, and public service. Roadhouse to host benefit for Dalmatian Rescue
Dalmatian Rescue of Delaware will be at the Roadhouse Steak Joint, Route 1, Rehoboth, on Monday, May 12, for Roadhouse’s 10 percent donation night. Dalmatian Rescue of Delaware receives 10 percent on all meals served that night to anyone mentioning their organization’s name. Members of the rescue will be on hand for questions and with information.

Georgetown Lions to meet May 13
The Georgetown Lions Club Dinner meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 13, at Easter Seals, located on the northbound side of Route 113, 22317 DuPont Blvd. District-22 cochairs of Special Olympics, Lion Winnie and Barbara Spence, will be the guest speakers accompanied by a Special Olympic athlete. Improv comedy nights to be held at Wahoo
The Delaware Comedy Theatre will present DCT Unbagged – Uncensored Improv for adults with a series of Friday night shows at Wahoo Raw Bar and Crab Company in Rehoboth Beach. The completely improvised comedy shows will be presented April 4, May 9 and June 6, with seating beginning at 6:45 p.m. The show takes place from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Reservations are required by calling the restaurant at 227-6700.
