Jesse Alan Gay,
dog breeder
Jesse Alan Gay, 20, of Millsboro, died Friday, Feb. 29, 2008.
Jesse was born on March 9, 1987, in Fredericksburg, Va. to Ronald A. and Jo Ellen Cox Gay of Millsboro.
He was a self-employed dog breeder and trainer. Jesse graduated from Delmarva Christian High School in Georgetown in 2006, attended the Bay Shore Community Church in Gumboro, was voted most valuable basketball player in high school and he also played lacrosse.
He loved hunting, fishing and basketball and he operated a dog breeding business for Staffordshire and Bull Terriers; he was devoted to and loved his dogs.
His best friends were his brothers; he loved his niece and nephew and was equally passionate about all of his family.
In addition to his parents, Jesse is survived by his girlfriend, Krista Wilson of Seaford; two brothers, Eric Gay and his wife Bethany of Millsboro, and Brian Gay and his wife Dasha of Millsboro; paternal grandparents, Robert and Margaret Gay of Vienna, Va.; maternal grandparents, Linwood and Shelly Cox of Leesburg, Va.; a niece, Hailey Gay; a nephew, Luke Gay; many very special friends; and his beloved canine companion “Lexie.”
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 5, at the Bay Shore Community Church in Gumboro, where friends may call one hour before the service. Pastor Danny Tice will officiate.
Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Route 113, Millsboro.
The family asks that contributions in memory of Jesse be made to the Delmarva Christian High School Basketball Program, Attn: Kathy Bryan, 21150 Airport Road, Georgetown, DE 19947.

Michael Steven Boyd,
Sunroc manager
Michael Steven Boyd, 52, of Magnolia, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008.
Michael was born on Aug. 31, 1955, in Portsmouth, Va.
He received his bachelor’s degree in history from Williams University in Bristol, R.I., in 1986.
Michael had served his country proudly in the U.S. Navy for six years.
He worked for Sunroc, Dover, as a team leader/line manager until 2005.
Michael was had been volunteering his time and computer skills at the Air Mobility Command Museum at Dover Air Force Base.
His many hobbies included computers, building models, photography, NASCAR and watching the New England Patriots.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Genevieve (Rox) Boyd.
He is survived by his father, Forest Melbourn Boyd of Lewes; a brother, Dennis and his wife Janet Boyd of Berwick, Maine; a sister, Linda and her husband Mark Hyler of Magnolia; and nieces and nephews Dennis, Arielle, Daniel, Jennifer and Briana.
Services and burial will be private.

Howard ‘Tootie’ Brand,
Pipefitters member
Howard “Tootie” W. Brand, 75, of Lewes, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Mr. Brand was born Aug. 31, 1932, in Wilmington, to the late Harvey F. and Elsie (Viehman) Brand.
Mr. Brand was employed by the Pipefitters Union Local 74. He worked in the Wilmington area for many years.
He and his wife relocated to Lewes in 1993, at which time he began a 10-year career with Lowe’s in Lewes.
Mr. Brand enjoyed boxing and horse racing.
He was a member of Unity Masonic Lodge 32, Tall Cedars of Lebanon-Brandywine Forest No. 20, Newport, Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540, and the Lewes-Rehoboth Beach Moose Lodge.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Francis and Paul Brand.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Gale (Geiger) Brand; his son, Howard W. Brand Jr. and his wife Wanda of Lewes; two daughters, Cherrie L. Brand of Bear, and Andrea B. Haugh and her husband William of Kennett Square, Pa.; four grandchildren, Leah Haugh, Lauren Haugh, Courtney Brand and Timothy Traynor; two brothers, James Brand of Fair Hill, Md., and Robert Brand and his wife Ruth of Massachusetts; and four sisters, Doris Brown and her husband David of Lewes, Katherine Crockett and her husband Charles of Delaware, Linda Mularczyk and her husband James of Massachusetts and Elsie Spicer and her husband Kenneth of Middletown.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, in Gracelawn Memorial Park Chapel, 2220 DuPont Highway, New Castle, where friends may call one hour prior. Masonic aervices will begin at 1:45 p.m. Graveside services will follow.

Dr. Wallace Lecher Jr.,
prominent physician
Dr. Wallace Oman Lecher Jr., 77, of Dagsboro, passed away Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at Atlantic General Hospital, Berlin, Md.
Born March 2, 1930, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., he was son to the late Wallace and Elva (Blackwell) Lecher.
He was a 1948 graduate of Upper Darby High School, 1952 graduate of Amherst College and 1956 graduate of Hahnemann Medical College.
Dr. Lecher served his medical internship at the Hahnemann-Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital, Philadelphia, and his urology residency from 1957 to 1961.
He served on the medical staffs of Hahnemann-Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital, Crozer Chester Medical Center and Riddle Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Lecher was the past president of the Philadelphia Hahnemann Medical Association, past treasurer of Hahnemann Alumni Association, past president of staff at Riddle Memorial Hospital, past president of Continued from page 16
Delaware County Medical Society and past treasurer and medical director of the Glen Mills Schools.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Millville.
He practiced urology in Media, Pa., and later opened a general medicine practice in Bethany Beach.
Dr. Lecher was the former medical director for Harbor Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Lewes, and the Millsboro Rehabilitation Center.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Robert Charles Lecher.
He is survived by his loving wife, Annette Georgette (Kirsch) Lecher; children, Linda Gail Jones, William J. Maher III, Nicole Maguire and Monique Maher; sister, Gail Elizabeth Reynolds; and four grandchildren. Burial will be private.

Shirley E. Imlay, 72, of Seaford, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, in Christiana Care-Christiana Hospital, Newark.
Mrs. Imlay retired from the Dairy Bar Restaurant, Seaford.
She was preceded in death by a stepson, William D. Imlay, in 1996.
She is survived by her husband of 40 years, William T. Imlay; two sons, John Robert Hall of Seaford and Robert Wilkerson of Milton; three daughters, Terry Edwards of Fruitland, Md., Patricia Gross of Quantico, Md., and Debbie Milne of Milford; two stepdaughters, Connie Powell and Brenda Phillips, both of Seaford; two sisters, June Milne of Willards, Md., and Pauline Hearn of Pittsville, Md.; 19 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in Cranston Funeral Home, Seaford, with burial in Galestown Cemetery.

Mary Jane Hood,

Mary Jane Hood, 79, of Laurel, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, surrounded by her loving family.
Mary Jane was born in Wilmington to the late Robert and Katherine Harrington. During her working career she worked for Strawbridge’s and the DuPont Edgemore Cafeteria. She was a member and volunteer at the Lewes Senior Center and the Henlopen Grange. As a homemaker she most enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren and loved to collect seashells on the Lewes beaches.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Hood Sr.; and a son, Wayne Hood Sr.; a grandson, Ronald Sipple Jr.; and a granddaughter, Kimberly Marie Hood.
She is survived by her children, Franklin Hood Jr. of Wilmington, Mary Katherine Kaminski of Wilmington, Lena Sipple of Wilmington, Earl Hood of Stanton, Lawrence Hood of Laurel, and Elaine Fleetwood of New Castle; a sister Peggy Dorsey of Claymont; and a brother, Robert Lee Harrington of Elkton, Md. Also surviving are 26 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services and burial are private.

Josephine Lewandowski,
bird rescue volunteer
Josephine “Josie” Lewandowski, 71, of Greenville, passed away quietly at her home on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008.
Born in Wilmington, Josie was the daughter of the late Ned and Helen (Gulczynski) Jackson. A graduate of Wilmington High School, she worked a series of bookkeeping jobs for Tower Hill School and Delaware Home Builders Association. She loved talk radio, was an avid golf fanatic and a volunteer for Tri-State Bird Rescue where she assisted with the cleaning of birds victimized by oil spills. She really enjoyed a good Casapulla’s sub. An independent, thoughtful woman, she had a laugh that you would remember. She led a life of quiet contemplation, offering her insights as she would attempt to make sense of the events of our times. Everyone can hold an opinion. The trick is to hold the correct one, she was known to say.
In addition to her parents, Josie was predeceased by her husband, Francis D. Lewandowski, in 1991; and her son, Andrew Scott Lewandowski, in 1965.
She will be missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer Lynn Lewandowski and Douglas Dubrosky of Bala Cynwyd, Pa.; her sons and daughters-in-law, David F. and Jeanne of West Chester, Pa. and Christopher and Suellen of Newark; and her grandchildren, Brandon, Haley, Emily, Basil and Seth. Also surviving are her sisters, Peg Naughton of Wilmington and Joan Krakowski, and her husband, John, of Newark; and her brothers, Joe Jackson and his wife, Chris, of Wilmington and Eddie Jackson and his wife, Helen, of Millsboro. Funeral services will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 4, at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown roads, Wilmington. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington. Mark W. Varrato, 36, of Millsboro, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford.
He was born May 26, 1971, in Salisbury, Md.
Mark was a cook for various restaurants in the Rehoboth Beach area.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Nick Varrato III.
He is survived by his parents, Nicholas and Joanne Timmons Varrato; grandmother, Nina W. Timmons; two brothers, Matt Varrato and his partner Michael Norris, Tony Varrato and his wife Bonnie; nephews, Dylan and Zack; and niece, Arina.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, March 9, at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where friends may call after noon. Burial will be private.

William Sheldon,
volunteer fireman
William “Billy” Sheldon, 49, of Lewes, died peacefully at his residence Monday, March 3, 2008.
He was born August 27, 1958 in Wilmington. He was a graduate of Claymont High School. He held an associate degree in criminal justice. He was a former member of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Department where he had served as a line officer.
In his free time he enjoyed golfing, fishing and driving his truck, known to all as Big Red. You could always find him during football season on the sofa watching his favorite team, the Philadelphia Eagles. Billy was a kind soul who was always there to help family, friends or strangers in need. He was a dedicated and loving father and husband to his daughter Brittany and wife Kim. He will be dearly missed.
In addition to his mother, Carol Sheldon of Lewes, he is survived by his wife, Kim Morris Sheldon; his daughter, Brittany Sheldon and her fiancé Bruce Benton Jr., both of Lincoln; his stepson, Ryan Austin Toohey of Lewes; his brother David “DD” Sheldon and his wife JoanCarol of Millsboro; his sister, Cathy Trethewey and her husband, Bruce of Finksburg, Md; and nephews Matthew and Michael Trethewey. He was preceded in death by his father, Clark “Pete” Sheldon.
A celebration of Billy’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 8, at Conley’s United Methodist Church, 22150 Robinsonville Road, Lewes, where friends may call starting at 1 p.m. Pastor Randy Booth will be officiating. Paula Jenkins,
marketing director
Paula Jenkins, 61, of Laurel died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2008.
She was born Jan. 16, 1947, in Ohio, to Paul and Connie Krotzer.
She was employed as an assistant marketing director for an assisted living facility.
Paula loved cross-stitching, knitting, gardening and cooking. She was a wonderful hostess, always having fun entertaining friends with her great home-cooked comfort food and warm pies. She loved to decorate her home with handcrafted personal touches. She shared these wonderful talents with her grandkids, who she always enjoyed taking care of.
She was preceded in death by her father, Paul Krotzer.
She is survived by two daughters, Summer Costleigh and husband Scott, and Stacey Lisk; a son, Brad Lisk and wife Nichole; four grandkids, Shane and Tanner Lisk, and Braden and Amelia Costleigh; and her mom, Connie Krotzer.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 15, at Christ United Methodist Church in Laurel. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in honor of Paula to the ALS Association of Greater Philadelphia, 321 Norristown Road, Suite 260, Ambler, PA 19002.

Gerard S. Garey,
Raskob president
Gerard S. Garey, 90, of Wilmington, died at home Friday, Feb. 29, 2008.
Mr. Garey was a native of Wilmington, a member of the first graduating class of Archmere Academy and a graduate of Catholic University. He proudly served in World War II as a captain in the Army. Following military service, he was employed for 20 years in the advertising department of DuPont, then accepted the position of executive director of The Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities, where he worked for 30-plus years, retiring at 80 as president. While his roots were in Wilmington, his heart was in Ocean City, Md., where he happily spent weekends and summers since childhood. Throughout his lifetime, he was a devout Catholic, an avid reader, a passionate fisherman, a country music aficionado and a credible artist. A good man - warm of heart, gentle, seeking the right, charitable in thought as well as deed.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maria Isabel “Ma-bel” Iriarte Garey, in 1987. Within immediate family, he is survived by their four children, Patricia M. Garey of Wilmington, Gerard J. Garey and wife Carol of Ocean Pines, Md., Elizabeth Garey Byrne and husband John of Newark, and Frank L. Garey and wife Regan of Wilmington; four grandchildren and one great-grandson. He is also survived by his sister, Louvonne “Bonnie” G. Knox Tigani of Lewes, and sister-in-law, Carmen I. Calbeto and husband Gabriel of Longwood, Fla.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 8, at St. Joseph’s-on-the-Brandywine Catholic Church, 10 Old Church Road (Route 100 & Route 141). Graveside services will follow. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, March 7, at the Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike. The rosary will be recited at 7:45 p.m.

Arvel L. Bales,
builder, developer
Arvel L. Bales, of Maryville, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord Monday, March 3, 2008, in Knoxville, Tenn.
Mr. Bales was a retired member of the United Mine Workers of America, District 29, Local 6105, and a builder/developer in various locales throughout the Eastern United States.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in various campaigns throughout Europe. He enjoyed traveling, reading and studying history.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Mary B. Bales; his parents, Frank F. Bales and Mae E. Bales; and an infant daughter, Pamela Bales.
He is survived by his two sons, Alan B. Bales of Rehoboth Beach, and Craig W. Bales of Maryville, Tenn. Also surviving are his two daughters-in-law, Lisa Marie Bales, wife of Alan, and Christie L. Bales, wife of Craig; granddaughters Alexandria, Alexis, Courtney, Ashley and Mary Beth, and one grandson, William.
Services for Mr. Bales will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, March 8, at Smith Mortuary, 1402 Tuckaleechee Pike, Maryville. Viewing will be from 5 to 7 p.m. and the celebration of his life and family will immediately follow at the funeral home.
A full Military Honor Guard will lay him to rest at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 9, at the Grandview Cemetery, Maryville.

Donald L. Melson Jr.,

Donald L. Melson Jr., 65, of Bridgeville, died Monday, March 3, 2008, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md.
Mr. Melson was born in Lewes, son of Ruth McCauley Melson of Dover and the late Donald L. Melson Sr.
He had lived in the Bridgeville area most of his life.
He had been employed by the state of Delaware as a health inspector.
Mr. Melson and his late wife had operated traveling concession stands in Sussex County for 13 years.
He enjoyed old Western movies, reading, model trains and gardening. He loved being with his wife, children and grandchildren.
Mr. Melson was predeceased by his wife, Martha E. Maule Melson on Jan. 10, 2008.
He is survived by three daughters, Donna Smith, Lisa Melson and Rebecca L. Melson, all of Bridgeville; a sister, Ruthann Melson of Dover; a brother, Richard Melson of Bridgeville; four granddaughters, Amanda McCormick of Ft. Stewart, Ga., Samantha Smith, Anna Melson and Courtney Melson, all of Bridgeville, and two great-grandsons on the way.
Funeral services were held at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Hardesty Chapel, Bridgeville. Interment was in Bridgeville Cemetery, Bridgeville.

John F. Rohleder Jr.,
Air Force veteran
John F. Rohleder Jr., 70, of Long Neck, died Saturday, March 1, 2008, at home, surrounded by his family.
Mr. Rohleder was born in New Haven, Conn., on July 18, 1937, to the late John F. Rohleder Sr. and Mary Augustine Rohleder.
He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a senior master sergeant in 1976, serving his country proudly for over 20 years. After his retirement from the Air Force, John realized his dream of owning and operating a farm near Greenwood.
In 1980, he joined SOLO Cup Company in Federalsburg, Md., and over the next 20 years, became an integral part of its operations. From airman to farmer to production manager, John had a distinguished career, and began a well-earned retirement in 2001.
He enjoyed fishing, boating and gardening.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Emma Joyce; two brothers, Donald and Daniel Rohleder; and a sister, Valarie Palange.
He is survived by four children, Shannyn Rohleder of Selbyville, Scot Rohleder of Anchorage, Alaska, Beth Rohleder of Long Neck and Sarah Joyce of Milton; two stepdaughters, Kristin Bennett and Kimberly Gerardi, both of Milford; 11 grandchildren; a brother, Joseph Rohleder of Baltimore, Md.; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 8, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 129 W 4th St., Lewes. Friends may call two hours prior at the church. Interment will be held at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Lewes.

Donald W. Sammons,
avid Dallas fan
Donald Wayne Sammons, 50, of Georgetown, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at Bayhealth Center, Milford.
He was born June 1, 1957 in Milford, son of the late Donald Irvin Sammons and Thelma Ann Scarbary Sammons. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Donnie retired on disability in 1997. He was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Jeff Gordon. He enjoyed collecting various items. He was always jovial and never met a stranger.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 8, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Dodd-Carey Chapel, 307 North Bedford St., Georgetown, where friends may call beginning at 1 p.m.
Interment will be at Union Cemetery, Georgetown. Pastor Roderic Dufour will be officiating.

Thelma M. Wilson,
first Dewey commissioner
Thelma M. Wilson, 90, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at her home on the island of Eleuthera, Bahamas. Her primary residence was in Dewey Beach. She was born Sept. 13, 1917, in Dover, daughter of the late Charles L. and Mabel Rash McColley.
Mrs. Wilson made her home with her husband in Dewey Beach since 1948. She was the first elected commissioner of Dewey Beach; she served three terms. She owned and operated the family business, Wilson’s Variety Store, for over 40 years. For many years, Mrs. Wilson volunteered at the New Life Thrift Shop operated by Epworth United Methodist Church. She was a faithful member of the Epworth community.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William M. Wilson in 1988; and her sister, Beatrice D. O’Donnell. She is survived by her son, R. Harry Wilson and his wife Donna of Dewey Beach; two grandchildren, Jason William Wilson of Dewey Beach and Amanda C. Pace of St. Augustine, Fla.; three nieces, Caddie Ann Joseph of Lewes, Betty Lou Bonneville of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Nancy Willis of Dover; and two lifelong friends, Mrs. Ethel Wood of Gregory Town, Eleuthera and Mrs. Edna Wiesel of Rehoboth Beach.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, March 14, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Howard Magargal Jr.,
former telephone worker
Howard “Buck” Magargal Jr., 71, of Milton, passed away Friday, March 7, 2008, in Beebe Hospital, Lewes.
Howard was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a journeyman-splicer, spending his early career at the Diamond State Telephone Co.
He is survived by sons, Scott Allen Magargal of Oxford, Pa., and Brian T. Magargal of Hockessin; a daughter, Amy Campagnone of Milton; eight grandchildren; a sister, Nancy Rodenbaugh of Rehoboth Beach; and Pauline J. Magargal.

Harry L. Gray, 86, of Dover, passed away Friday, March 7, 2008, in the Delaware Veterans Home, Milford.
Harry was born March 30, 1921, in Dover, son of the late Elmer and Natalie Gray.
He was a graduate of Dover High School. Harry was a proud veteran of the U.S. Marines, serving during World War II and achieving the rank of corporal.
He worked for Frear’s Dairy before going to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, from which he retired.
Harry was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed fox hunting with his friends. He always had kennels filled with his beloved beagles.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Short.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Gloria S. Gray; a son, Larry D. Gray and his wife Sue of Camden; a daughter, Sharon G. Simmons and her husband Earl of Camden; five grandchildren, David F. Simmons and Julie Perez of Dover, Deborah and Joe Gumpman of Harrington, Laurie and Dave Hake of Camden, Kristin Gray of Lewes, and Brooke Gray of Camden; and his great-grandchildren, Joey and Samantha Gumpman, and Adam, Andrew and Addison Hake.

Martha Jean Parcher,
noted artist, singer
Martha Jean Walton Parcher, 83, of Chestertown, Md., passed away suddenly Saturday, March 8, 2008, at Chester River Hospital, Chestertown.
She was born Jan. 18, 1925, in Bryn Mawr, Pa., the daughter of Thomas E. Walton and Georgia B. Walton of St. Davids, Pa.
Jean is survived by her husband, James H. Parcher; their four sons, Tyler, David, Kenneth and William Parcher; eight grandchildren; and one sister, Mary W. VanCampen of Vero Beach, Fla.
Jean attended Shipley School, graduating with the class of 1943. As a young woman she volunteered extensively during World War II as a hospital aide and sang in benefits for the troops at the VA hospital. She studied voice under Giuseppe Augustini, a well-known tenor at the New York Metropolitan Opera.
Jean married James H. Parcher of Bala Cynwyd, Pa., in 1946, and she taught at and ran the Newtown Square Friends Nursery School. In 1963, the Parchers moved to Georgetown, where they built and managed Skipjack Cove Yachting Center, which they owned for 25 years until retiring in 1988.
During these years, Jean used her lovely singing voice as a soloist for both the Zion United Methodist Church and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church choirs and was active in the local community. Jean was an accomplished artist, well known for her copper-enameling work and paintings and was an active member of the Chestertown Art League as well as the Sanibel/Captiva art community in Florida. Her artwork is represented in many private collections both here and abroad.
After retiring in 1988, Jean and Jim Parcher spent time in the Heron Point Retirement Community, as well as their home in Lewes. She had many friends in the community and will be sorely missed by all who loved her.
A private family viewing will be Thursday, March 13, at Fellows Funeral Home in Chestertown, and a memorial service will be held at West Laurel Hill Cemetery Chapel in Bala Cynwyd from noon to 1:30 p.m., Friday, March 14. Pamela Jean Conner, 44, of Lewes, died Thursday, March 6, 2008, in Laurel, Md.
Pam was born in Fairfax, Va. She had lived in Sussex County since 1992. She had been employed as a title clerk with an automobile industry in Virginia.
Pam was the owner and operator of a tanning salon, Pam’s Tans, in Lewes. She was a devoted mother to her two sons.
Pam was preceded in death by her mother and one sister, Dale Bibb.
Pamela is survived by her stepfather, Michael Dumal of Lewes; and two sons, Anthony Bibb and Thomas Mansfield, both of Lewes. She was the niece of Maxine Anderson, Mildred McDaniel and Jean Jenkins, and the cousin of Ross and Thomas McDaniel.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 11, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Greg Lehman will be officiating.

Lance V. Bradley,
Bell Atlantic retiree
Lance Valiant Bradley, 57, of Lewes, passed away suddenly on March 5, 2008, at his late residence.
He was born Sept. 11, 1950, in Washington, D.C.
Upon graduation from the local schools he went to work for the Bell Atlantic Telephone Company, retiring after 30 years of service, working in the Central Office Maintenance and Power Systems.
He took great pride in his many fine cars. One could always find Lance in his garage working on or fixing his Corvettes.
Following retirement he moved to Lewes, where he enjoyed many of the benefits of beach living.
He is survived by a son, Paul N. Bradley; his ex-wife, Kathy Geary; his mother, Marjorie Neuhaus; his father, Paul Neuhaus; his brothers, Ivan and Stanley; a nephew, Jason Bradley; and two nieces, Jennifer and Ashley Bradley.
Memorial services were held at the Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes. Entombment was private at Bethel Methodist Mausoleum, Lewes.

Benjamin “Bud” Vinton Jr.,
prominent developer
Benjamin “Bud” Vinton Jr., 83, of Rockland, died peacefully on Feb. 29, 2008, in Greenville.
Born in Wilmington, he was the son of the late Benjamin Vinton and Lucy Beck Vinton of St. Georges.
Bud grew up on the family farm in St. Georges where he attended St. Georges High School before going to boarding school at Mercersburg Academy. He graduated from Mercersburg in 1943, and attended Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., under the Navy V-12 program as a member of the class of 1947.
He married Yvonne Johnson of Dover in 1945 before he was called back to active duty to serve with the Navy in Korea from 1950-52. While in Korea he was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor while serving as executive officer on board the minesweeper USS Redstart. Bud thoroughly enjoyed his Navy career and during his lifetime rose to the rank of captain.
After the war, Bud returned to Delaware and began his career in banking, investments and real estate in his father’s business, Commonwealth Trust Company. In 1959, he became president of Commonwealth Trust Company and started Commonwealth Realty and Vinton Enterprises. Bud became one of Delaware’s earliest and most successful real estate developers and was long considered “The Dean” of Delaware real estate.
He put together partnerships that developed University Plaza shopping center and office park, Rockland Mills condominiums, property along the I-95 interchanges and dozens of other projects throughout Delaware.
Along with a career in real estate development, Bud successfully involved himself in the ownership of car dealerships, hotel ventures, and gas and oil partnerships, becoming a true entrepreneur.
He stood in the community he loved as a man of honor and integrity. In addition to his love of hunting and fishing, Bud was a longtime resident of Rehoboth Beach, his beloved summer home. He was a member of the Wilmington Country Club, the Vicmead Hunt Club and the Rehoboth Beach Country Club, where he enjoyed playing golf, tennis and squash. Bud served on the boards of directors of the Bank of Delaware, Home Federal Savings and Loan Association, St. Matthew’s Community Center and First Federal Savings Bank. He was a trustee/director of American Guaranty and Trust Corp., Stockton Development Corp., Protestant co-chairman of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, Trustee Alumni Council of Mercersburg Academy, Director of Greenville Country Club, past president of Krebs School and served on the finance committee of St. James Episcopal Church in Newport and later at Immanuel Episcopal Church in Wilmington.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Yvonne Vinton.
He is survived by his children, Victoria Vinton King of Oxford, Pa., Brock Vinton of Montchanin, and Beau Vinton of Ashland; five grandchildren, Heather Robitzer, Brock Vinton II, Jennifer Vinton, Leslie Vinton and Victoria Vinton; and two great-grandchildren, Mattie and Lily Robitzer. He will be missed.
A Celebration of Life and sharing of memories in Bud’s honor was held at the Vicmead Hunt Club, Owls Nest Road, Centreville. Burial was private.

Thomas McNiff,

Thomas Michael Leo McNiff, 49, formerly of Dover, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2008.
He was born on Feb. 27, 1959, in Mahanoy City, Pa., to Irene Thatcher Denham and the late Michael McNiff.
Tom attended school in the Capital School District and graduated from Dover High School in 1977. Upon graduating from high school, Tom was employed with ILC in Frederica.
He later moved to Tennessee where he lived for the past 25 years. He was employed as a mechanical engineer at Teledyne.
He enjoyed life with friends, fishing and golf.
He is survived by his wife, Becky Tucker McNiff; his daughter, Michelle Short of Tennessee; his mother and stepfather, Irene and Edgar Denham of Dover; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Michele and Russ McCabe of Milton, and Melissa and Jim Hulbert of Baltimore; four nephews, Josiah McCabe of Long Neck, Coulter McCabe of Milton, and Jamison and Jonas Hulbert of Baltimore; his step-daughters, Laura Jeremy Johnson and Erin Traynor, both of Alabama; and a loving extended family.
A gathering of family and friends to celebrate his life was held at the London Funeral Home, Tenn.,

Everett J. Kimmey,
retired special agent
Everett J. Kimmey, 90, retired brigadier general, of Millsboro, formerly of Wilmington, passed away at his home on Wednesday March 5, 2008.
He was born Aug. 13, 1917, in Houston.
Mr. Kimmey graduated from Milford High School and Strayers College in Philadelphia, Pa. He was a World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Army. He was a retired special agent for the Intelligence Division of the U.S. Treasury Department. He was the former deputy commander of the 261st Signal Command of the Delaware Army National Guard.
Everett was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Rehoboth Beach. He thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren and serving with the Army Reserves. He also enjoyed visiting local restaurants in the area.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Madlyn; son, Dennis J. Kimmey; stepson, Donald Ellis; and stepdaughter, Madlyn Dayton.
He is survived by his son-in-law and caregiver, Harold Dayton of Wilmington; three grandchildren, Alma Kimmey of California, Blair Lee of Wilmington, and Tracy A. Rahner of Wilmington; and several great-grandchildren.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at noon, Wednesday, March 12, at Epworth United Methodist Cemetery in Rehoboth Beach.

Kathryn “Kitty” Evelyn Hitchens Meredith, 75, of Ellendale, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 6, 2008, at Bayhealth Center, Milford.
She was born April 2, 1932, in Redden, daughter of the late John Morris and Margaret Evelyn West Hitchens.
Kathryn was a homemaker who worked at the Ellendale Market as a clerk. She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her entire life revolved around her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold J. Williams, and her second husband, Louis N. Meredith; two brothers, Harvey and Hoyt Hitchens; and two sisters, Mildred Hudson and Ruth Littleton.
She is survived by three daughters, Diane Short and her husband Donald of Ellendale, Cathy Williams and David Cannon of Lewes, Sheila Zook and her husband Wayne of Greenwood; a son, Steve N. Meredith of Ellendale; three grandchildren, Donnie Short Jr. and his wife Joy, Krystal Zook and Brandon Zook; two great-grandchildren, Ty Short and Brice Short; two brothers, John Hitchens and his wife Bernice, and Donald Hitchens and his wife Sydney; a sister, Marie Ellingsworth; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Dodd-Carey Chapel, Georgetown. Interment was in Bridgeville Cemetery, Bridgeville.

Gerri O. Conyngham,
retired social worker
Gerri O’Kane Conyngham, 83, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 5, at her residence in Lewes.
She was born June 4, 1924, in Philadelphia, Pa., daughter of the late Alphonsus and Gertrude O’Kane.
Mrs. Conyngham was predeceased by her husband, Wilson Yates Conyngham; and her brother, Gerard O’Kane.
She is survived by her sisters, Maureen Van Bergen of Wilmington, and Nancy Osburn of Cleveland, Ga.; her nieces, Cathy Tatman of Lewes, and Maureen Frame of Georgia; her nephews, Peter Van Bergen of Wilmington, Dennis, Stephen and Douglas Osburn of Florida; and her beloved great-nieces and great-nephews.
Prior to moving to Lewes, Mrs. Conyngham resided in Glassboro, N.J., and later in Wilmington. In her early career, she worked as a customer service representative and administrative assistant. Subsequently, she returned to school and received an associate’s degree from Gloucester County Community College after which she was employed by the Gloucester County, New Jersey Division of Social Services as a social worker. After retiring, she was active as a volunteer in several organizations in both Wilmington and Lewes including St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, the Friends of Rockwood, the Lewes Historical Society, the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. She was an active member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church. She was employed by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce as receptionist for eight years and retired from that organization in 2005.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 12, at St. Jude The Apostle Catholic Church, Route 1, north of Five Points, Lewes. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to Mass. Father James Hreha will be the celebrant. Interment will be private.

Marie F. Pierce,
retired nurse
Marie F. Pierce, 95, of Lewes passed away peacefully in her sleep Friday, March 7, 2008.
Marie was born to the late Frank and Pauline Warzecha on Sept. 11, 1912, in Portland, Ore. The family settled in Milford. Marie married the love of her life, the late Leo Pierce, and moved to Wilmington.
Marie was known to everyone as “Mom Mom” and she dedicated her life to taking care of others. She began her career in nursing in the Milford Hospital, then the Veterans Administration Hospital in Elsmere. She then transferred to the Wilmington General Hospital Emergency Room from where she retired. Marie traveled on the weekends to the beach and eventually decided to reside in Angola.
Once Marie had moved to the beach she still had the need to take care of others. She began working at the Visiting Nurses Asociation, then Home Health Care, then Sussex County AIDS Council and private duty nursing. Anyone who had the pleasure of meeting her was touched by her strength, love of life and ability to take care of others.
Marie was an active member of St. Edmond’s Catholic Church where she was a eucharistic minister. She loved being surrounded by her family. Marie also loved to do arts and crafts. In September, on her 95th birthday, she was incredibly happy to have a surprise birthday party with more than 100 attendees from all over the United States. She was loved by so many people.
In addition to her parents and husband, Leo Vincent Pierce who died in 1983, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Rosalie Charles, and granddaughter, Pamela Topor.
She is survived by her children, Helena Mack of Cochranville, Pa., Edward Pierce of Newport, Pat Lockwood of Lewes, who took tremendous care of her mother until she passed away, Barbara Muterspaw of San Diego, Calif. and her grandson, Timothy Charles, whom she raised from the age of 18 months old; 10 other grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren; and a niece, Deborah Pierce, who also helped to care for Marie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Michael J. Carrier at 10 a.m., Thursday, March 13 at the Cathedral of St. Peter, 500 N. West Street, Wilmington. Interment will follow at All Saints’ Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington. Sadly Charles Richard “Charlie Flowers” Davidson, 56, of Lewes, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008, in Milford, following a long illness. Executive chef for Amtrak, he was employed by various national corporations. He was the son of the late Mary Drummond Davidson of Amherst, Va. and Benjamin Palmer Davidson of Montclair. Charlie graduated from Sparta High School in New Jersey in 1969, and from Rider College in 1973 with a degree in accounting. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1977 after serving overseas. Pursuing a second career, Charlie graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. He provided professional services to Lowe’s Home Improvement in Lewes. Charles leaves two sons, James F. Davidson of Red Bank, N.J. and Andrew D. Davidson of San Francisco, Calif.; and their mother, Margaret Robinson Davidson of Nashville, Tenn. He also leaves three brothers, Alexander Davidson of Blairstown, Michael Davidson of Eupora, Miss. and Henry Bannister of San Francisco. In addition he leaves four sisters, Charlotte Davidson of Monticello, N.Y., Jean Bannister of Centerville, Mass., Gail Michaud of Marblehead, Mass. and Louise O’Neil of Hyannis Port, Mass. He is also survived by two aunts, Charlotte Albrecht of Riverside, Conn. and Joanne Davidson of Maplewood, N.J.; and a host of loving nieces and nephews. Baby Isabella Hayes Isaacs died suddenly Thursday, March 6, 2008, just nine days after entering this world.
She was born a beautiful, happy and healthy little girl.
Isabella was the daughter of Shannon Kain Hayes and Jeffrey Scott Isaacs of Rehoboth Beach; Ms. Hayes was formerly of Leesburg, Va.
Isabella is also survived by her grandparents, Betsy Isaacs of Rehoboth Beach, Dave Isaacs of Milton, and Candace Kain Hayes of Leesburg; two great-grandmothers, one of whom is local, Dixie Kain of Rehoboth Beach; one great-grandfather; three aunts, Molly Hayes, Courtney Hayes and Kimberly Taha; and one uncle, Jack Isaacs. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Harold Arthur “Skipp” Hayes III, and her maternal uncle, Danny Hayes.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 15, at Union Cemetery, Leesburg.
Baby Isabella will be laid to rest next to her grandfather and her uncle.

Norwood Lowe,
lifelong farmer
Norwood Lowe, 82, of Millsboro, died at home Monday, March 10, 2008. Mr. Lowe was born April 12, 1925, in Frankford, to the late Walter H. and Carrie Mitchell Lowe.
He was a lifelong farmer in the Gumboro area and, until recently, still actively farmed over 200 acres. He loved family, especially the large gatherings at family dinners, annual July 4th picnics at Holts Landing, Carey’s Camp Meetings, Chincoteague Pony Penning, hog-killings, and fishing, clamming, and crabbing outings on the Indian River. In addition to his parents, Mr. Lowe is predeceased by three sisters, Myrtle Mumford, Edna Powell, and Elva Lowe. Mr. Lowe is survived by his wife of 65 years, Irene Cordrey; four children, Carol and husband Darryl Hudson, Phillip Lowe and wife Rose, Sharon and husband Johnny Lecates, Lisa and husband Jeffrey Fisher; eight grandchildren, Teresa Mumford, Tara and husband Jeff Davis, Buddy Lowe, Derek Lowe and wife Frannie, Dawn and husband Norm Short, Ashley Fisher and friend Joey Touchton, Amber Fisher, and Michelle and husband Gabriel Gutierrez; and eleven great-grandchildren, Myron, Storm, Paige, Taylor, Alyssa, Tiffany, Logan, Andrew, William, Dylan, and Courtney. Also surviving are one aunt, Hilda Esham Hall; and friend Pat Peters. Norwood is also survived by a brother-in-law, Guy Baker, and a nephew that he considered as a second son, Marshall Mumford.

Susan Ann Simcox,
FCC retiree
Susan Ann Simcox, 59, died Thursday, March 6, 2008, in Ocean View, Delaware after a brief illness. Susan was born in the District of Columbia and raised in Montgomery County, Maryland. She attended Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and the University of Maryland. For nearly 30 years she worked at the Federal Communications Commission as a manager and specialist in equal employment law. In 1999 Susan retired to the Delaware Shore.
Susan was known for her love of animals and, in particular, her beloved show dog Darla, a champion Lhasa Apso, and her two talking parrots. She was also a gardener, a collector of rare jewelry, a rock music fan, and a Washington Redskins zealot. Susan was fond of the beach and it had always been her dream to retire there.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Helen Simcox of Chevy Chase, Md. She is survived by her companion of more than two decades, Scott Roberts of Edgewater, Md.; her brothers, John Simcox of Annapolis, Md., and Howard Simcox Jr. of Gaithersburg, Md.; and her sister, Deborah Simcox of Boise, Idaho. She is also remembered lovingly by two sisters-in-law, Gail Simcox and Judith Simcox, and four nieces and nephews, John, Gregory, Dana and Howard III.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 15, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call 30 minutes prior to the service.

Eugenia Marie Norton,
teacher and mentor
Eugenia “Jean” Marie Mokski Norton, 72, passed away peacefully at her residence in Rehoboth Beach, Saturday, March 8, 2008 after a brief battle with lung cancer. She was born in Bufflao, N.Y. on June 3, 1935, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Mokski.
She was raised in Lackawanna, N.Y., and in 1957 received a bachelor’s degree in education from Buffalo State College of the State University of New York.
She married Donald J. Norton on June 29, 1957. The couple had seven children: Jack, of Los

Angeles, Calif., Susan, of Ithaca, N.Y,; Eric, of Lanoka Harbor, N.J., Ann, of Fenton, Mich., Catherine, of Ithaca, Lawrence, of Arlington, Va., and Donald Jr., who died in a motorcycle accident in 1988.
Jean taught elementary grades in public schools in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. In recent years she served as a volunteer mentor in the after-school instruction program conducted by West Rehoboth New Beginnings.
She is survived by her husband and their six children; her brothers, Donald, of Carlsbad, Calif., and John, of Discovery, Calif., and four grandchildren, Tess Norton of Santa Clarita, Calif., Ricardo Norton of Ithaca, and Benjamin and Joseph Henley of Fenton, Mich.
A Catholic Blessing Service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, March 14, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, and a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 15, at St. Edmond’s Catholic Church, King Charles Avenue and Laurel Street, Rehoboth Beach.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to West Side New Beginnings, Children’s Educational and Recreational Program, 100 Norwood St., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.
