Constance Costigan, a Lewes resident, has won the Juror’s Award in the Delaware Center of Contemporary Art’s juried show, “Crossovers: Craft, Art, Design”.
Juror Ursula Ilse-Neuman, curator of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, chose works from 31 artists from among the 113 who submitted works for consideration. The artists’ “diversified backgrounds and wide-ranging expressions reflect the artistic spirit of our time,” Ilse-Neumwn wrote in her juror’s statement. “Whether taking cues from functional design and craft or from sculpture and painting, the artists selected for this juried exhibition have successfully crossed the artificially imposed boundaries that too often separate art, craft, and design.
Instead of finding themselves in separate camps, these artists share a philosophy of inclusiveness in which the creative pathways are unlimited.
Their often unorthodox approaches to concepts, materials and techniques result in provocative, aesthetically satisfying works that merit and reward our attention.”
Costigan is Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts at George Washington University. Her works are in such major collections as the Hirshhorn Museum and The Phillips Collection in Washington.
She has had 18 one person shows in such cities as New York, Washington, Philadelphia, Edinburgh, and New Dehli.
The show is on exhibit Feb. 3-April 23, at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art, 200 South Madison St., Wilmington.
