In an effort to help a young family facing a tragic medical situation, Mark Slaughter and his family at Lee F. Slaughter Fine Cars have set up a trust fund and are raffling off a new Chrysler Crossfire.
Slaughter, a long-time automobile dealer in Dover and Rehoboth Beach, recently wrote to auto dealers throughout the state seeking their financial assistance for Brian Miller and his family. He is also raffling off the new car with all proceeds to go to the family as a further means of easing their financial worries during this tough time.
Miller was recently diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Now, fighting what will likely be a terminal disease, Miller wants to make the most of his remaining months with his wife and two young sons while he fights the brain tumor that threatens to take his life in the next several months.
Slaughter explained that Miller came to work for him 20 years ago as a lot boy - cleaning cars, keeping the lot presentable and attractive, doing anything needed to keep a busy sales lot functioning well.
Slaughter knew Miller was a hard worker but it wasn’t until he watched him interacting informally one day with a customer that he realized his full potential. “I immediately recognized a serious ability for sales,” said Slaughter.
After a few “very successful” years of sales with Slaughter, Miller eventually moved to C.F. Schwartz Motor Co, in Dover with an eye toward eventually running the company. By 2005, Miller has achieved his dream when he was promoted to sales manager.
Now that dream has been dismantled and Slaughter wants to help the family, which includes Brian’s wife, Kris, Slaughter’s niece. In his letter to other auto dealers, Slaughter wrote: Brian and Kris wish to spend their remaining days as a family. Needless to say this will be difficult without help.
Brian’s sole source of income is a small amount from short-term disability. Kris is a full-time elementary school teacher with a good income.
However, her wish is to spend as much time as possible helping Brian battle this disease. Although this is Stage IV cancer, both are determined to do all they can to beat it. Their family and friends are helping out to the best of their abilities, but they could use your assistance.”
In addition to establishing a trust at Wilmington Trust Company under the name “The Friends of Brian Miller,” Slaughter is also selling 500 tickets at $100 each for the drawing for the new Chrysler Crossfire. The car is available for inspection at Slaughter’s “Carriage House” dealership on Route 1 in Rehoboth Beach and the drawing will be held later this summer.
Donations to the Miller trust fund can be sent to Wilmington Trust Company, 139 South State Street, Dover, Del. 19901. Account No. 61205292. For other information, contact Mark Slaughter at 302-228-7992.
