Autism Foundation honors Schell as volunteer of the year

The Lower Delaware Autism Foundation recently named Bradford Schell as volunteer of the year.

“Brad exemplifies what it means to be a volunteer,” said foundation Executive Director Melody Fargo, “and he deserves this recognition. Our organization has grown so fast over the few short years as a nonprofit that we have had to rely upon volunteers in order to accomplish our goals.”

Schell was honored during a party last month at Dogfish Head Brewing and Eats in Rehoboth Beach.

LDAF holds numerous events such as the Autism Ball, the LDAF half marathon, and a new, upcoming venture, the first LDAF/Irish Eyes Fall Fling to be held Oct. 22 at the BayCenter. “We simply couldn’t put on all these events without the help of volunteers,” Fargo said.

Schell assisted different committees for several foundation events. “He never complained about the work or tasks he was asked to do and always came through when we were in a pinch. Once, Brad was awakened at 5:45 on the morning of the half marathon by both myself and the president of the foundation, Rudy, yelling into separate phones for him to get out of bed, get to the Cape High School for an emergency. The hitch couldn’t be found that would take the 100 gallons of water to every water station along the race course and we needed Brad to bring his truck and hitch and time was running out. Not only did Brad fly out of bed, but he went on to even run the half marathon,” Fargo said.

Schell enjoys volunteer work and appreciates being around the parents that deal every day with an autistic child. “They are always the most energetic and happiest group of people although they are dealing with so many issues all the time. I’ve gained a tremendous respect for the challenges they face every day,” he said.

The foundation continues to focus on providing housing and vocational opportunities for post-21 adults that have autism. In doing so, its volunteer needs continue to grow, Fargo said.

Anyone interested in joining one of its committees or one of the autistic programs should contact Fargo at 302-644-3410 for more information.
