Michael Hulme, expressionistic artist and resident of Newark, brings his unique and vibrant Tropical Reflections series and other works to the art scene with an exhibition of his colorful work Aug. 1-31 at the 205 Lavinia Street House On The Hill art gallery in Milton.
An opening reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 20, at 205 Lavinia Street, where live ukulele music, light fare and beverages will be enjoyed.
Hulme primarily paints with acrylics on masonite, and enjoys using strong color, bold lines, and thick layers of paint throughout his pieces. The subjects that interest him most are figures, flowers, and animals.
Hulme’s educational background includes attending the Chadds Ford Academy of Art for the past three years. This school is a small group of local artists instructed by accomplished artist Eo Omwake.
“The thing that motivates me to paint is being able to tell the story of my life experiences by using paint,” Hulme said.
“I have traveled to Europe, Asia, Hawaii, and most recently, the U.S. Virgin Islands in the Caribbean, which has inspired my latest tropical series. I want to paint it all the people, animals, water, trees, flowers and the competing feelings of relaxation and excitement. When I paint, I extract the feelings that I want to express, and apply it as a non-representational color, which will support the main subject.”
Hulme has shown his work in galleries in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. He has participated in juried and small group shows in Cheltenham, Pa. and Wilmington and his paintings are in private collections in these states.
