For the first time on the Delmarva Peninsula, H2Air Kiteboarding of Dewey Beach will host the Fly to...Red Bull King of the Air Sept. 10-12 at Delaware Seashore State Park. The Dewey Beach Fly to...Red Bull King of the Air qualifier is one of the many qualifying events taking place at locations including Mexico, Italy, Poland, Dubai and the Caribbean. Each event has been established to allow worldwide participation in the premier kiteboarding event of the season, the Red Bull King of the Air. Given Dewey Beach’s location, situated on both the Atlantic Ocean and the Rehoboth Bay, kiteboarders will experience the best of both worlds. “Dewey Beach is an awesome place for kiteboarding,” said event organizer and owner of H2Air Kiteboarding, Dave Loop. “There are so many various conditions so close together since the bay and the ocean are only a quarter mile apart.”
Based on the wind and water conditions the event will either be held at Tower Road oceanside, New Road bayside or possibly both, depending on the daily conditions, at the north end of Dewey Beach.
“I would really like it to be held in the ocean; the finals in Maui are held in the ocean, so I think it would be a great test since most of the other qualifiers are held in flat water,” said Loop.
Whether the event is held on the bay or ocean, Delaware Seashore State Parks provides a great location for spectators to witness the competition.
Those who watch the action will see a variety of kiteboarding moves - everything from big airs to technical tricks. Some of the tricks that might be displayed are 360 handle aerial passes, down spins and kite loops. Conditions permitting, some kiteboarders could launch themselves more than 40 feet in the air.
