Ed Lewandowski takes the rains at the Center for the Inland Bays

By Jim Westhoff

The Center for the Inland Bays (CIB) will announce today it has a new executive director.

Ed Lewandowski, a long-time staffer for the center, will take over the top post.

“Ed brings to the CIB a diverse set of skills and experience acquired during more than 15 years of employment in the natural resource protection, conservation and environmental education fields,” said Rick Eakle, chairman of the CIB.

“The board believes that his background will enable him to further support the development of the CIB and its programs,” Eakle said.

A graduate of South Hampton College in Long Island where he studied marine science, Lewandowski has been working at CIB for six years as the education and outreach coordinator. Before working at CIB, he served in the parks and recreation division of Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.

“I took this position because I feel that my skills, experience and familiarity with the organization will facilitate a smooth transition in leadership,” Lewandowski said.

He said he is confident CIB will be able to continue its efforts to clean Delaware’s bays through “the implementation of the Comprehensive Conservation Management Plan. The action plans in the CCMP were developed by numerous stockholders. I think that we may need to revise some portions of the plan to account for the changing landscape of the watershed.”

Lewandowski said the exploding population of Sussex County has burdened the state’s inland bays. “I just don’t think anyone anticipated that the population would grow by 38 percent since 2000.”

Lewandowski lives in Bridgeville with his wife, Jill Lewandowski, and their two children, Kyrra, 12, and Korina, 7. Jill Lewandowski is a middle school teacher in the Bridgeville School District .
