Annual Sea Witch Festival to mark 15th anniversary

The annual Sea Witch Festival will celebrate 15 years in Rehoboth Beach, Oct. 29-31. The festival features a wide array of events and is produced by the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce.

The costume parade will feature more than 1,000 participants, including bands, decorated cars, surprise entries and the Nur temple.

Rolling units begin at State Road and merge with walkers a few blocks down Rehoboth Avenue at the convention center. The parade route goes to the Rehoboth Bandstand and ends at Village by the Sea.

All parade participants are encouraged to pick up a raffle ticket at Village by the Sea Shops for a prize drawing. Trophies are awarded to the judge’s favorites. Parade participants receive a Sea Witch Kicker 2004 ribbon. The parade begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30, with a rain date on Sunday.

Fiddlers and banjo players alike provide a full day of foot-stompin’ entertainment from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand. With a cash prize contest, the audience becomes the recipient of some of the best pickin’ possible. This fiddler’s festival has been billed as top string and is the best on the coast. There is both an adult and children’s competition for best fiddle, blue grass and banjo playing.

All age categories get a chance to toss their numbered broom off the Boardwalk, with the longest distance winning at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30. All participants receive a ribbon.

The Big Dogs Best Costumed Pet Contest goes way beyond dogs and cats into the unknown. Former critters have included ducks with an attitude, Leonardo Ninja Turtle, and even a black goat named Little Devil dressed in a red cape and sporting red painted horns. Prizes are awarded to judge’s favorites.

The Big Dogs Best Costume Pet Contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 31, with lineup beginning at noon at Stuart Kingston (north end of the Boardwalk). Promptly at 1 p.m. the monsters wag their way down the Boardwalk.

Following the parade, prizes are presented at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand.

All participants receive a Big Dogs of Sea Witch ribbon. Lineup is at the boardwalk and Stuart Kingston Gallery, located at 1 Grenoble Place. Pets and owners parade down the Boardwalk letting the crowds get an eyeful. Judge’s favorites are called onto the stage where prizes and ribbons are awarded.

The Maryland Rough Riders will provide horse performances and drills on the beach at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30, and 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 31. These cowboys become beach boys for the day parading and exhibiting their dexterity on horseback, dressed in cowboy attire.

Those who believe they have both the hunting skill and the stamina needed must first check in with the official clue keeper and pick up a 100-clue site location list. The clues run in no particular order, so hunters take their best guess prior to a final cut-off time. The earliest correct guess wins a cash prize.

The Hunt begins at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30. The winner is announced at the Bandstand on Saturday night at 6:45 p.m.

Live entertainment is scheduled at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand on Saturday, Oct. 30, and Sunday, Oct. 31. This year’s entertainment includes, Spooky Spats, Jack Noel Magic Show, a Fiddler’s Festival, Frank Nanna & Friends and more. Matthew Dodd with Songs & Stories of Old Sailing Days is a new addition.

Many of the more than 400 runners, including entire families, arrive in costume for the annual 5K run and Webfooters Walk at 9 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 31, beginning at Grove Park.

Prizes are presented not only for time, but also for the best costumes. Past runners have included the Little Red Riding Hood family, various farm animals and monsters.

The walk will take place on Saturday and Sunday. The registration/walk starts at 8 a.m.

Other activities slated for Sea Witch include a Kid’s Pirate Treasure Trail, Monsters In The Sand Contest, Orange Glow at the Bandstand, Pumpkin Dash, trick or treating with merchants, artisan show, face painting, sand pit, kids make it-take it craft area, fun games and a duck calling contest.
