All aboard 'Polar Express'
Thursday, Dec. 15 at the Rehoboth library

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society and the Rehoboth Beach Public Library are cosponsoring a children’s film series, titled Third Thursday Theater.

The monthly series features the screening of an age appropriate film for the purpose of exposing youth to cinematic arts as a means of entertaining, educating, and/or raising awareness of numerous social issues.

The next session of Third Thursday Theater will take place at 6 p.m., Dec. 15, at the Rehoboth Beach Library’s upstairs meeting room. The feature will be The Polar Express (running time 99 minutes, rated G). The film is adapted from the classic picture book by Chris Van Allsburg.

The Polar Express concerns a young boy who is at the critical age when he begins to doubt the existence of Santa Claus. Late on Christmas Eve, he lies awake in bed awaiting the sounds of sleigh bells and reindeer hooves, when instead he hears the whistle of a steam engine!

The conductor invites him aboard to join all of the other children who have been wondering if Santa Claus is real. The train begins to travel northward into the night, taking the children on the trip of their lives. Along the way, they encounter dancing waiters serving hot chocolate and a hobo hitching a ride.

The train ultimately takes the children to the North Pole, but it is during the journey that the children recapture the magic of Christmas.

Tom Hanks voices many of the film’s characters, making him the primary star. His voice, blended with the magic of CGI, make for an eye-popping, fun-filled film that will keep many youngsters’ eyes glued to the screen with delight. At each session, a book that corresponds to the film’s theme will be awarded as a door prize. Popcorn and juice boxes will also be provided.

Donations of $1 per person will be gratefully accepted to help defray program costs. Advanced reservations should be made at the Library or at the Film Society Office (102 Midway Village).

Third Thursday Theater is held at 6 p.m. on the third Thursday of every month in the upstairs community room of the Rehoboth Beach Public Library. Information about each month’s film can always be found in the library on the Third Thursday Theater sign. For more information, contact the Rehoboth Beach Film Society at 645-9095 or the Rehoboth Beach Public Library, at 227-8044.
