Working under the time-tested adage, “We will serve no water before its time,” labeled bottles containing Lewes drinking water were given to each Board of Public Works member and a member of the public attending the board’s Thursday, Dec. 14 meeting.
Board member C. Wendell Alfred developed the idea of bottling city water earlier this year after the board and the City of Lewes in February received the Best Tasting Water in Delaware Award from the Delaware Rural Water Association.
Lewes’ water ranked first in the state among municipal water suppliers that included Rehoboth Beach, Long Neck, Henlopen Acres, Selbyville, Frankford and New Castle County.
Alfred said the bottled water is a marketing tool, which promotes the board and city’s commitment to quality water. Bottled water will be available at various public events and other functions, he said.
After design of a label and board approval, a thousand 16-ounce bottles were produced by Lewes Dairy, which uses city water to process its products. George, Miles & Buhr Engineering, the city’s engineering firm, co-sponsored the project.
