Lewes Farmers Market
begins its second season June 9

.

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market will begin its second year at 8 a.m., Saturday, June 9, at the Lewes Historical Society Complex, 110 Shipcarpenter St., Lewes.

Local chef Mark Steele will demonstrate the making of zucchini cakes at 10 a.m. Mark and his brother Richard are the proprietors of award-winning Café Azafran.

There will be 14 new vendors at the market in addition to the veterans from last year.

Bennett Orchards, Fifer Orchards and Paradise Orchards will provide peaches, nectarines and apples.

A new cheese maker, Chapels Country Creamery, produces artisanal cheeses made with milk from its herds of Jersey and Holstein cows. All of the milk is free of synthetic hormones, antibiotics and chemical compounds.

Mushrooms from Davidson Exotic Mushrooms will be for sale, and Deep Grass Nursery will bring fresh herbs, herbal vinegars, bedding plants and more.

Magee Farms’ offerings include English peas, melons, cabbage, sweet corn, cauliflower and hanging baskets.

M&M Farms has baby melons grown without synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.

Nancy’s Fine Foods will feature homemade soups, chicken salad, specialty breads, fresh fruit pies and other items.

Nuts to You has fresh, locally grown pecans - raw, roasted, salted, glazed, spiced and in-shell.

Provident Organic Farm offers bok choy, kohlrabi, leeks, sweet and hot peppers, shallots, winter and summer squash, beets, turnips, heirloom tomatoes, sweet potatoes and more, all grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. The Farm has certified organic eggs.

T.S. Smith & Sons will have tomatoes, lima beans, sweet peas, turnips, blueberries, blackberries, broccoli, cucumbers, pumpkins, cider and other items.

Old World Bakery (Steve Kogler of Teller Wines) will be selling two types of bread - organic sourdough made from 250-year-old starter from New England with just a hint of sourness and an organic French baguette.

Vendors from last year will be back as well.

Afishionado specializes in fresh fish and fabulous shrimp salad.

Baues’ Busy Bees’ happy bees make wonderful lotions and candles.

Freeman Farms, Fischers Farm and Magee Farms will all be back with fresh fruit, corn, apples and peaches in season.

Bella’s Cookies is the place to find a dessert to take to dinner. Our recommendations include Whoop-de-doo, an all-natural version of the Pennsylvania Dutch whoopie pie cookie; or their all-natural, rich and creamy cheesecake. Also available are gluten-free cookies.

Community Organics’ Tim and Aspen Bell bring produce to Lewes every Saturday morning. In addition to eggs they have recently had house mild salad mix, spicy salad mix, California herb salad, stir-fry mix and young collard greens.

Eggs of a Feather, formerly Guinea Daddy Keets, has about 50 more hens this year. He also still has the guinea hens and will have their eggs this summer, as long as he can keep up with the hens’ natural desire to hide their nests in the woods.

Fischer’s Farm won’t be at the market until mid-August. They will have early apples, Stanley plums and delicious Asian pears. Much of what Freeman Farms has will come a little later in the season – corn, tomatoes and purple bambino eggplants.

Good For You Natural Market, 28841 Lewes-Georgetown Highway, opened in early winter. Owner Andy Meddick will be back at the market this year bringing lovely greens including his famous arugula. The store carries organic produce, a variety of health products for the body, vitamins, organic meats and much more.

Hattie’s Garden has changed its name from Petal Pushers. Hattie will have mesclun mix, braising greens, arugula, radishes, cut flowers and bedding plants. She is growing 20-plus varieties of heirloom tomato plants that will do well in our mid-Atlantic region. All are grown from organic seed and in organic potting soil. She also has various eggplant and pepper plants ready to go into the garden.

Hickman’s Market will feature organic chicken, fabulous rib-eye steaks, sweet Italian sausage, Canadian bacon, smoked duck breast and all types of beef, lamb and fowl.

Tommy Eliason from Kalmar Farm prepared the barbeque for the hoedown, and it was good eatin’. His Cherry Belle radishes, Swiss chard and Yukon Gold potatoes are also terrific.

Lavender Fields’ Sharon Harris will continue to make wonderful gifts and products using lavender and lavender plants.

Olivia’s Bread’s are made with natural organic flours and produce. She is known for working with anyone with dietary restrictions or allergies.

Pasqualini’s Bakery brings strudels, Italian bread, fruit pies, cookies, muffins, croissants and more.

Pipedreams Fromage is a very real, very fresh, French-style goat cheese from Greencastle, Pa. The cheese is produced in the farmstead fashion with culture imported from France. It is hand-ladled and turned. Samples will be available at the farmers market table.

Surf Bagel features the best bagels south of Brooklyn along with coffee to go with the bagels.

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market will provide a family-friendly community gathering place for consumers to be able to purchase the freshest local foods available.

It will also provide educational opportunities for farmers and others to help create sustainable food systems.

The market will continue its popular series of demonstrations by members of The Master Gardeners and by local chefs.

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market will be held from 8 a.m. to noon, every Saturday from June 9 through Sept. 29, at the Lewes Historical Society Complex, corner of West 3rd and Shipcarpenter streets.
