The new show at the Peninsula Gallery on Saturday, Aug. 4, is a collection of saltwater themes and “peoplescapes” by local artist Barbara Petterson. A resident of Lewes for close to 20 years, Petterson has been painting the local area and its people for some time.
Painting mostly in acrylic, her panoramic work is realistic, carefully composed and features bright, crisp colors and rich textures. Whilst her peoplescapes are also carefully composed, the characters often contain a touch of whimsy and seem to be representative of some of the more outrageous looking sun seekers that can be found enjoying our shores during the holiday season.
Petterson earned a bachelor’s degree cum laude from the University of Maryland and a master’s degree from The American University in Washington, D.C. For almost 10 years she was Director of Service Clubs and Craft Shops for U.S. Military personnel overseas, followed by seven-year term as director, Department of Art and instructor of art at Marjorie Webster Junior College in Washington. She then spent almost 30 years at Gallaudet University for the deaf as chairperson of the art department and as an instructor.
Petterson has been published several times and has won numerous awards in state and out of state. Her work can be found in many private and corporate collections. She is a member of the Rehoboth Art League, Delaware State Arts Council, Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts and the Art Institute and Gallery in Salisbury, Md. This will be her first one person exhibit at the Peninsula Gallery.
Images in her show can be previewed on the gallery website, www.peninsula-gallery.com. A reception for the artist will be held at 5 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 4 and the exhibit will remain on view until Aug. 29. The Peninsula Gallery is located at 520 E. Savannah Road in Lewes, just across the canal bridge, and is open seven days a week. Call 645-0551 for further details.
