In the last quarter century, the pharmacy has expanded its role within the healthcare delivery system from a profession focused on preparation and dispensing of medications to one in which pharmacists provide a range of patient-oriented services to maximize medicine’s effectiveness.
During American Pharmacist Month in October, Happy Harry’s, a Walgreen’s Pharmacy on Route 24 in the Back Bay Shopping Center, is offering its patients flu vaccinations administered by pharmacists.
Each year from November to April, approximately 60 million Americans are afflicted with influenza.
It is predicted that more than 200,000 people will be hospitalized this season and 36,000 people will die. The ideal time to be vaccinated is in October and November.
However, getting vaccinated in December can still be beneficial since flu season usually starts in January.
People who should receive annual flu vaccinations include children older than 6 months to 5 years, pregnant women, people older than 50, people with chronic health conditions and healthcare workers.
An annual vaccination protects not only the people vaccinated but also all those they come in contact with.
The pharmacist is a key healthcare professional who helps people to achieve the best results from their medications. Choosing a trusted pharmacist can help build a partnership for good health.
