Mayor Sam Cooper proclaimed Saturday, Oct. 20, as Boardwalk Buddy Walk Day in the City of Rehoboth Beach to celebrate the accomplishments of people with Down syndrome.
The mayor’s proclamation reads:
Whereas, Down syndrome is a chromosomal abnormality affecting more than 350,000 people in the United States; and
Whereas, people with Down syndrome posses a wide range of abilities, and are active participants in educational, occupational, social, and recreational circles of the community; and
Whereas, each October since 1981 the Down syndrome community has been celebrating Down Syndrome Awareness Month with the goal of providing special opportunities to learn about Down syndrome and to promote acceptance and inclusion of individuals born with this genetic condition; and
Whereas, the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk Buddy Walk is a one-mile walk being held to promote these goals and to celebrate the life and accomplishments of all people with Down syndrome;
Now, therefore, be it resolved, that I, Samuel R. Cooper, Mayor of the City of Rehoboth Beach, do hereby proclaim Oct. 20, 2007, as 2007 Boardwalk Buddy Walk Day in the City of Rehoboth Beach, and invite all citizens to take due note of the observance.
