Sussex County Recorder of Deeds John Brady announced he is running for insurance commissioner, making him the first Republican candidate to challenge three Democratic candidates.
Unveiling the campaign slogan, “Let the Big Guy Work for You,” Brady announced his intention to run Monday, Jan. 21, in Ocean View. He also said for now, he will continue serving as Sussex County Recorder of Deeds.
Brady, 48, is a deputy attorney general and legislative attorney for the Delaware House of Representatives Republican Caucus. He is also an attorney with Brady Richardson Beauregard & Chasanov LLC in Georgetown and represents Milton and Dewey Beach.
“I’m excited about the campaign, and I have four primary concerns, should I be elected to insurance commissioner: health, property and automobile insurance and the Children’s Health Insurance Program,” Brady said.
As to health insurance, Brady says he plans to take advantage of available prevention programs, which he says will lower rates in the state and reduce the number of uninsured Delawareans.
Brady was raised in Wilmington and after working for several nonprofit agencies, he attended Widener University School of Law, where he graduated cum laude in 1991.
Considering his many obligations, he said, “After I’m elected, I can’t hold two public offices. I would most likely give up recorder of deeds. I probably would still teach, but we’ll see.”
Chairman of the Delaware Republican Party Terry Strine said, “In all cases, my position is to encourage him to speak in Sussex County and throughout the state, not just Republican circles, but in Rotary clubs and other groups as well.
“He needs to determine if he has the stomach for the race. And knowing John, he does,” said Strine. “He is a sensible and ethical guy, and I’m sure he’ll make he right decision.”
Candidates have until Friday, July 25, to file with the state’s Department of Elections. So far, Eugene Reed, Karen Weldin Stewart and Thomas Savage all Democrats have announced their intent to run. They are set to face off in the state’s Democratic primary Tuesday, Sept. 9.
Brady will tour the state in February, making stops in Rehoboth Beach, Dover, Middletown and Wilmington, where he will officially announce his bid on Thursday, Feb. 7. Brady also plans to attend a Republican State Committee dinner at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 25, at the Hilton Christiana in Newark.
