Close to 100 people, Lewes residents, guests from neighboring towns, artists and patrons joined at the Peninsula Gallery Saturday, March 1, to celebrate the opening of its new group exhibit, Looking at Lewes the Contemporary Artist’s Eye. “It is wonderful to be surrounded by such beautiful images of the town we love so much,” said Peggy Treadwell.
The current exhibit follows a collaboration by the Lewes Historical Society and the Peninsula Gallery to recreate as closely as possible an exhibit first presented in Lewes in 1977 called Looking at Lewes The Artist’s Eye. It included 38 of the original 69 paintings and additional artworks created prior to the 1977 show.
“That was Lewes as seen by artists in the past. This is Lewes as seen by artists today,” said Peninsula Gallery owner Tony Boyd-Heron, who asked 11 artists to create new works recording their views and impressions of Lewes.
“I asked the artists to present the town as it exists now,” said Boyd-Heron. Artists who met the challenge and have works on display are Steve Rogers, Nick Serratore, Julie Molyneux, Roger Dellar, Michelle Marshall, Andrew Criss, Julie Baxendell, Doris Ingram, Barbara Lloyd, Laura Hickman and Karin Snoots.
Guests at the reception found themselves constantly comparing the works of the past with those of the present. Local artist Aina Nergaard-Nammack said she found herself more impressed by the overall quality of the paintings created by the 11 contemporary artists.
Her friend Mary Ellen Wolzanski said she felt the current show was more dramatic.
Looking at Lewes the Contemporary Artist’s Eye will be on display through Tuesday, March 25.
The Peninsula Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. More information is available by calling 302-645-0551, and the contemporary artworks, which are available for purchase, can be viewed online at www.peninsula-gallery.com.
