Milton to upgrade Memorial Park
with the addition of gazebo, play area

Next summer, Milton residents may be able to watch bands play at a new gazebo on land that reaches into the Broadkill River.

Milton officials are overhauling Milton Memorial Park, and they plan to start by replacing playground equipment and constructing a new pavilion.

Officials said the first priority for the park, behind Irish Eyes and the Milton Public Library on Union Street, is to update playground equipment.

Architects have proposed four play areas, one of them a 40-foot play ship that will invite children to slide off its bow and climb in the hull. Brick walkways, similar to Governor’s Walk, are also proposed to connect recreational areas and the gazebo.

Plans for the pavilion along the river include a deck that will extend into the park to allow performers to leave the stage and merge into the crowd.

Milton Town Council unanimously approved a master concept plan for the park at its Monday, March 3 meeting.

“I am in hopes that construction of all these things will begin in early summer,’” said Milton Parks and Recreation Committee Chairwoman Deanna Duby. “We will still be working to refine the plan – making changes in locations of things like lights, water hook-ups, benches and grills,” she said.

Town officials hired Dover-based Cabe Associates to manage the process. Landscape Architectural Associates drew the plans.

Play areas include a tot lot for children ages 2 to 5 with a seesaw and balance beam. Another area for children up to 12 years old will include a swing set.

Duby said town officials decided to first replace playground equipment and the gazebo to ensure safety. More expensive walkways may be added later. Town officials have budgeted more than $100,000 for the project and plan to seek grants to help fund the improvements.

The next step is to issue a request for proposals.
