At its fourth annual dinner, the Milton Historical Society paid tribute to former leaders of the society and to a docent who logged more than 400 volunteer hours in 2007.
About 170 members gathered Saturday, April 19, in an upstairs meeting room at the Milton Volunteer Fire Department.
Herman Black, the Rev. Donald Clendaniel, Medford King and Dr. James White sat front and center as emeritus trustees, each receiving a plaque for his service.
Milton Historical Society Executive Director Melinda Huff presented the inaugural Volunteer of the Year Award and a bouquet of flowers to Jeanette Wagner, who was chosen from more than 70 volunteer docents. Board trustee Jack Hudson joked that he and trustee David Dutton were only 12 years old when the board of trustees held its first meeting in 1970.
Milton Volunteer Fire Department firefighters D.J. Hughes and Ray Burton served up cocktails for guests, who dined on fried chicken and macaroni-and-cheese from Jimmy’s Grille in Bridgeville. The event raised more than $2,000, said Huff, including $450 raised in a 50-50 raffle conducted by Gladys Wilkins. In a benevolent spirit, Burton, who won the raffle, donated his share back to the historical society.
Former Milton resident Lisa Wolfe, who now lives in New York City, produced a video, “Historic Milton,” which was shown. The slideshow is available online at www.historicmilton.org.
