The Broadkill River Canoe & Kayak Race returns for its ninth straight year on Saturday, Aug. 23. The annual paddling competition, which has become a staple event in August for the historic Town of Milton, has also grown to be one of the best attended a races in the Mid-Atlantic region.
While there are many contenders in the race who want to score the fastest times and vie for the trophies and cash prizes awarded to first-, second- and third-place finishers in every boat category, most participants come to score an enjoyable day of healthy exercise and friendly sport along the scenic Broadkill River - all to benefit the nonprofit Milton Theatre.
Official sign-in & registration for the event begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Oyster Rocks Road landing (east of Route 1 north-across from Eagle Crest Airstrip) outside of Lewes, and racing will commence by boat category beginning at 10 a.m. Entry fees are $20 for a single canoe or kayak and $35 for a two-person canoe or kayak.
There is a women’s division in the single canoe and single kayak categories only. The 10-mile course follows the Broadkill River northwest to Milton’s Memorial Park, where food and craft vendors at the town’s Bargains on the Broadkill will be set up to greet and refresh paddlers.
Every registered racer receives an official 2008 T-shirt, sponsored this year by ASAP Screen Printers, East Coast Property Management, Schell Brothers and Short Funeral Services.
Paddlers must supply their own kayak or canoe; however, rentals can be pre-arranged by calling Quest Fitness at 302-644-7020. Van transportation from the finish point in Milton back to Oyster Rocks Road landing will be available at the conclusion of the race and trophy ceremony, also courtesy of Quest Fitness,
