Cape grinds out 26-18 win over Milford

Cape football eschewed the aerial assault and went ground round against Milford last Friday night, Sept. 19, and the only hooves dropped were on the heads of the Buccaneer defense as Cape rolled behind four runners for a surprising 26-18 victory.

The win moves Cape to 1-2 on the season as the Vikings host Sussex Tech on Friday night, Sept. 26. Milford fell to 2-1.

“We got ahead for the first time this season 6-0 in the second quarter and we were 12-0 at the half,” said Cape head coach Dave McDowell.

“I like the way our kids handled their second half comeback -12 to 12,” said McDowell who got running touchdowns of nine yards from Vinnie Vazquez (6:04) and Brent McDowell (3:59). Both Cape touchdown drives of 70 and 75 yards began after Milford turnovers - a fumble and John Boyer interception – and both drives also aided by Milford personal fouls.

“Players were out from both teams for injury and disciplinary reasons and that is just part of the game,” said McDowell. “The big thing for us was holding onto the football.”

Kyle Norwood held onto the ball for Cape rushing for more than 100 yards and a touchdown and freshman Brandon Lewis had 90 yards and one touchdown.

“We have a host of runners and this week Kyle ran for over 100 and Brandon for over 90 and Brent for over 70. Vazquez gives you positive yardage every time he touches the ball. I think its pretty neat to how four different kids touch the ball,” McDowell said.

Milford took advantage of a short field wind at their backs to open the second half taking a drive 37 yards with Brandon leGrande scoring on a 9 yard touchdown run.

Legrand came back with a 64 yard “can’t nobody catch him” touchdown to close 12 to 12 with 2:13 in the third quarter. Any and all extra points and runs failed to convert entering the fourth quarter of a tie game.

Cape remained composed and continued to move the football scoring on a five-yard Kyle Norwood touchdown run and a Ryan Goodwin extra point to surge in front 19 to 12 with 6:13 left to play.

Brandon Lewis later scored from inside the 10 as Cape went on to win 26-18 for their first victory of the season.

“We felt our O-line was getting better and better each week,” said McDowell. “Last week against Delmar we ran for over 250 yards and this week we ran over 300 but without the fumbles. Fumbles have been killing us this year and we didn’t put the ball on the ground at all.”

The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.
