The Friends of Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge will sponsor the annual Vandegrift Memorial Lecture on Saturday, Sept. 13, in the Milton Theatre, featuring marine biologist Sandy Burk, a noted science educator, conservationist and author.
The Vandegrift Lectures were created with a fund provided by the family and friends of Benjamin M. Vandegrift, a neighbor and friend of Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, in his memory.
Administered by the Friends of Prime Hook, the lectures are devoted to furthering the conservation of wildlife resources. Burk’s presentation will cover the story of how American shad and other fish populations support the ecosystems of refuges like Prime Hook, including the bald eagle populations found at the refuge.
She will discuss the unique partnership between the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, schools and environmental groups and how they are bringing back the American shad and other seriously threatened fish in the Chesapeake and Delaware bays.
Burk is the author of the award-winning book “Let the River Run Silver Again!” During the past 20 years she has worked with universities, state and local agencies, and private organizations throughout the Middle Atlantic region on aspects of marine biology, and the monitoring, conservation, restoration and interpretation of freshwater and marine systems.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for ages 12 and under. Tickets will be available at the door. The theater will open at 7:30 p.m.
