The back line of the undefeated Cape field hockey team isn’t looking for credit, praise or recognition.
Kara Voss, Jessie Dmiterchik and Kelly Smith are only unsung in the church bulletin. But when the choir starts to sing at game time these three defenders know their job is to shut down that attack and the best scorers of the opposing team.
“Defense wins games,” said Kara Voss with a smile. “We take a lot of pride in shutting down the other team.”
“Our job is to stop the ball and keep it off the goalie,” Dmiterchik said.
“I played midfield in middle school but I’ve always been a better defender,” said freshman Kelly Smith.
Cape played out a typical script for them last Tuesday, Sept. 28, on the fast turf at Legends Stadium beating Smyrna 4-1 and outshooting the Eagles 43-2 while allowing goalies Tori Bunting and Veronica D’Amico no opportunities to make saves.
Chelsea Reed scored goals in the first and second half off assists from Jacki Coveleski and Molly Desmond.
Kaci Coveleski scored a first- half goal off an assist from Maura Johnson.
Caroline Judge scored an unassisted second-half goal.
Kyle Apostolina scored for the Eagles with 3:43 left in the game.
Smyrna goalie Kelsey Knab had 20 saves for the Eagles.
Cape was scheduled to play at Polytech Thursday, Oct. 2, then host Red Lion Christian at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, with the junior varsity game to follow.
JUNIOR VARSITY ACTION - The Cape junior varsity field hockey remains undefeated with another win against Smyrna, 4-0. Cape’s relentless offense and strong midfield keep the ball in the opponents’ end most of the game, and when the opponents get a break, the defense is right there to send the ball back up the field.
Goals in the game were scored by Jenna Steele (2), Erin Ricker (1) and Taylor Trimmer (1). Assists came from Lexi Heuring (1), Alexa Hendrickson (1) and Jenna Steele (1). Cape had 16 corners and 24 shots on goal. Cape goalies only saw four shots on goal.
The JV team traveled to Polytech Thursday, Oct 2.
