Cape booters top Salisbury, Lake Forest

The Cape soccer team moved to 5-2 on the season last Tuesday night, Sept. 28, after a 3-2 win over the visiting Salisbury (Md.) School. Salisbury dropped to 3-4-1.

Cape dominated play early, pushing balls into the offensive end with through passes by Tristan Karsnitz to striker wings David Mesquita and speedy Nick Priano. Karsnitz himself had a clear look 15 minutes into the first half but lifted a shot over the crossbar.

Mesquita beat the entire defense on a direct kick finding the underside of the crossbar for a 1-0 Cape advantage in the first half. Mesquita scored on a scorcher from the right side off a assist from Alberto Martinez at 24:00 to lead 2-0.

Cape’s defense misplayed an offensive charge by Salisbury which got a clear shot then a rebound which was sent home by a Salisbury striker past goalie Andrew Scrutchfield as Cape led 2-1 at halftime.

The Vikings got a second-half goal on a header from Jon Moore off an assist from Tony Mendez. Cape outshot Salisbury 16-10. Goalie Scrutchfield was credited with seven saves.

Cape moved to 6-2 on the season with a 7-2 road win at Lake Forest last Wednesday night, Oct. 1. Cape first half goals were scored by Tony Mendez, Nick Priano, Nate Carnevale and Alberto Martinez. Mesquita scored two second-half goals while Nate Carnevale also scored his second goal of the game. The boys pulled a 0-0 draw with Sussex Central on Thursday, Oct. 2.

The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.
