Cape students to present 'Great Expectations'

Theatre Academy to open Dickens show Oct. 10

As of September, Clear Space Productions, in conjunction with Cape Henlopen School District, has inspired the genesis of the Theatre Arts Academy at Cape Henlopen High School. The academy will open with an adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel "Great Expectations" Friday, Oct. 10.

The students will also partake in their first quarterly performance Thursday, Oct. 30, at the high school Little Theatre where they will exhibit what they have learned thus far in theatre classes. This latter performance is free to the public.

"It's just like working with a professional theatre company," said Ken Skrzesz, program director, after coming back from class on the second day of teaching the Level 2 students at the high school.

"The manner in which they conduct themselves and how they rise to the high expectations I have set for them is truly astounding - and promising."

The students are excited and enthusiastic as well. Hunter Graves, a freshman who attends Cape Henlopen High School, is currently enrolled in the Theatre Fundamentals course, Level 1 at the Theatre Arts Academy. "I am so fortunate that this program is available at Cape. I look forward to attending theatre class on a daily basis. It is the highlight of my school day," he said.

Graves is also a cast member in "Great Expectations," which will open at Cape's Little Theatre at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10. Clear Space Company Manager David Button is directing the show and is thrilled to be able to work with the students. "They are there because they want to be and because they are passionate about what they are doing. They are such a talented group of students and it is exciting to be able to shape them through this experience."

The students from the Theatre Arts Academy will take part in their first quarterly performance at 7 p.m., Oct. 30 at the Little Theatre. This performance is free to the public. "Great Expectations" will be performed at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10, and Saturday, Oct. 11, as well as a 3 p.m. Sunday matinee on Oct. 12. Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults. No reservations are necessary.
