Local kart racers get national wins at Margarettesville

Three local kart racers earned national wins last weekend (Sept 28-29) at Margarettsville Speedway in Margarettsville, N.C. That Saturday they raced in the American Kart Racing Association’s American Speedway Championship Dirt Series season finale.

On Sunday they competed in the seventh annual Big Kahuna Championship Series. Brandon and Alex White of Lewes earned wins in Animal Heavy and Junior 3 Gold Race 1, while Millsboro-based Zach Bullis bested the Kahuna Junior 1 Purple Heavy field.

Adam Beville, of Stony Creek, Va., clocked Animal Heavy Race 2s pole time turning a 14.770-seconds lap on the quarter-mile clay oval. Sixteen-year-old Brandon White was second fastest at 14.819-seconds. When the green flag waved, White hustled into the early lead as Beville dropped deep into the field.

Former national champion Josh Haire of Erwin, N.C. moved up to second and began challenging White for the lead. White prevailed.

When they reached the stripe, White took the checkered flag with a comfortable 1.088-seconds cushion.

“That was fun,” White beamed after his win. “The Eclipse kart handled like a dream. It was rolling through the turns and down the straight-aways. Eddie Mishue’s motor was amazing.”

Earlier in the day. Brandon blasted around the track in 15.084-seconds for Animal Heavy Race 1’s pole. White struggled in that feature race dropping to a fourth place finish.

Brandon’s younger brother, Alex, qualified fourth in Junior 3 Gold Race 1. His 15.885-seconds best effort was 0.359-seconds off Austin Wyatt’s pole winning 15.526-seconds run. Wyatt grabbed the early lead while White worked his way through the field. Wyatt took the mid-race signal and then two laps later surrendered the front to White. When they crossed the stripe for the final time White was there with a 0.105-seconds advantage.

“This is my first time running Gold here,” said 12-year-old White. “The Eclipse kart handled really good, it stuck everywhere I went and drove good. The Mishue motor was awesome; it’s the fastest one I’ve ever seen. I want to thank Mishue Motorsports, my dad; and my tire man Jamie.”

Nine-year-old Millsboro native Zach Bullis posted Junior 1 Purple Plate finishes of second and third during the show that Saturday. Chase Rawlings, of Emporia, Va. earned those wins. Sunday Bullis blistered the track with a 16.034-seconds pole-winning run. From there he was perfect in his pursuit for a win. The first start ended with the caution flag flying before the first lap was complete.

Bullis led them single file back to the green flag. Behind him Rawlings was working his way to second. Once he secured second he set his sights on Bullis who had built a comfortable lead by then. With just three laps left that cushion was cut short by the race’s second caution flag. Bullis led the restart with Rawlings on his tailpipe. Bullis held on as Rawlings offered him a few late race challenges, but Bullis prevailed to the end.

“The caution didn’t worry me,” said Bullis, adding, “The Phantom Icon kart handled good and the P&P Speed Shop motor was fast. I want to thank my mom and dad for working on tires and Jeffery at P&P for the great motor.”

The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.
