Sea Witch Festival returns
to Rehoboth Beach Oct. 24-26

The 19th annual Sea Witch Halloween & Fiddlers’ Festival, Sail Away at Sea Witch, will be held Oct. 24-26 throughout Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach. Here are a few of the events planned:

• Costume parade. All are invited to join the thousands of costumed participants, bands, decorated cars, surprise entries and the Nur Temple in the annual parade, which begins at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 25, and is weather dependent. Walkers line up at Rehoboth Beach Convention Center and selected motorized/rolling units line up at State Street. The parade route follows Rehoboth Avenue to the Bandstand and ends on the avenue at Village by the Sea. All parade participants are encouraged to pick up a raffle ticket at the Village by the Sea Shops immediately following the parade for a prize drawing. Trophies are awarded to the judge’s favorites, and all parade participants receive a Sail Away at Sea Witch ribbon. The size of the parade no longer allows for a rain date.

• The Fiddler’s Festival will be held from 1 to 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct 25, at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Hall. Fiddlers and banjo players alike provide a full day of foot-stompin’ entertainment. With a cash prize contest, the audience becomes the recipient of some of the best pickin’ possible. There is both an adult and children’s competition for best fiddle, blue grass and banjo playing. The Fiddler’s Festival is sponsored in part by the Cape Gazette.

• Broom Tossing Contest, set for 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 25, is a contest open to all ages. Age-based categories get a chance to toss their numbered broom on the beach, with the longest distance winning.

• “The Grimm Forest,” by Clear Space Productions, will be held Friday and Saturday evenings, Oct. 24 and 25, in Grove Park. The young and young at heart will be led by Little Red Riding Hood, through the uncharted woods of Grove Park for a nominal fee.

• Big Dogs Best Costumed Pet Parade, a perennial favorite, is set for noon, Sunday, Oct. 26 at Grenoble Place and the boardwalk. Former bow-wow critters and winners have included those outfitted as spiders, surfers, cowboys, pirates and even Amelia Barkhardt. Prizes are awarded based on judge’s favorites. All participants receive a Big Dogs of Sea Witch ribbon. No livestock, wild animals or reptiles are permitted in the contest. Pets and owners parade down the Boardwalk letting the crowds get an eyeful. Judge’s favorites are called onto the Bandstand where prizes and ribbons are awarded. Judging will begin at 12:15 p.m., and promptly at 1 p.m. the monsters wag their way down the Boardwalk. The contest is sponsored by Big Dogs Sportswear.

• Saltwater Cowboys’ Horse Show on the Beach takes place at 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 25 and 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 26. Sit back and watch the Maryland Rough Riders as they provide musically choreographed horse performances and drills on the Beach. These cowboys become beach boys for the day parading and exhibiting their dexterity on horseback, in full cowboy attire.

• Sea Witch Hunt begins at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 25, with the winner announced at 7:15 p.m., Saturday. Those who believe they have both the hunting skill and the stamina needed, must first check in with the official clue keeper and pick up a 100-clue site location list. The clues run in no particular order, so hunters take their best guess prior to a final cut-off time. The earliest correct guess wins a cash prize.

• Live entertainment is scheduled at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand on Saturday, Oct. 25, and Sunday, Oct. 26. This year’s entertainment includes Spooky Spats family show, Guido Camponelli Magic Show, Jack Noel Magic Show, Southern Delaware School of Art’s Steel Drum Band, “Steel the Show,” Delaware Comedy Theatre and more. Returning by popular demand from the Andy Griffith Show are the Gomer Pyle and Barney Fife impersonators.

• Randy Lee Ashcraft & The Saltwater Cowboys, a great band straight from the Eastern Shore of Maryland with their own brand of music often called “beach country” will be performing while waiting for the parade, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 25 at the parade judge’s stand at the corner of First Street and Rehoboth Avenue and from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand.

• The 5K Race features more than 500 runners, including entire families, many of whom arrive in costume. Prizes are presented not only for time, but also for the best costumes. Past runners have included cartoon characters, cheerleaders, various farm animals and monsters. The 5K Race begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 at Grove Park.

• The Webfooters Walk - the walk will take place on Saturday and Sunday. The registration/walk starts at 8 a.m. and hundreds join in.

• Old fashioned beach games will start at 2 p.m., Oct. 25 on the beach at Rehoboth Avenue; ribbons will be given to all participants. Games include Peanut on the Nose race, Apple Push, Pumpkin Dash, Boo Buoys, Monster Mash and more.

The weekend will also offer kids and adults the opportunity to get their picture taken with Frankendude from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 25; to place their hands in the Witch’s Goo, beginning at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 25 at the bandstand, and a Kid’s Pirate Treasure Trail, where they will go on a hunt, following their pirate’s map to a treasure. Participants can pick up their map between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 26 at the bandstand.

Kids will also enjoy trick or treating with merchants, scarecrow making, face painting, kids make it-take it craft area, artisan and heritage craft show and other fun games.
