Nationally recognized photographer Kevin Fleming has donated a signed copy of his new book “Wild Delaware,” together with an original print of the cover photograph, as an auction item at the Live Brightly Benefit, to take place 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 7, at the historic Milton Theatre.
The benefit has been organized by Tunnell Cancer Center to support patients in their battle against cancer. All proceeds will go directly into the Tunnell Cancer Center Patient Special Needs Fund.
The cover of the colorful book is a photograph of three great egrets jostling for a perch in Rehoboth Bay rookery. The 24-inch, square print is signed and Rehoboth Art and Framing in the Midway Shopping Center has donated the framing.
“We are thrilled to have received the photograph and the book from Kevin,” said Judith Ramirez, event coordinator and the social worker at Tunnell Cancer Center.
“We appreciate his support of our Patient Special Needs Fund, and of the work we do at Tunnell Cancer Center.”
Fleming, a familiar name in local art circles, worked as a photographer for National Geographic for a decade and has been recognized America’s Best Observer by Reader’s Digest. His assignments have taken him into war and famine in Somalia, to the Mediterranean for a recreation of the voyage of Ulysses and put him on a dogsled crossing the Canadian arctic.
Fleming has worked in 26 countries photographing subjects as diverse as the sub-atomic world of high-energy physics and New Zealand sheep ranchers. While reporting on the Sinai Peninsula in 1981, Fleming came under the assassins’ gunfire that killed Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. He escaped with some of the few images of that tragic moment.
A Delaware native, Fleming began his career as a newspaper photographer after attending Wesley College, where he has been inducted into the college hall of fame and in 2007 was named the distinguished alumni of the year. His photography has won many national and international awards.
He now focuses on creating books. “Wild Delaware” will be published soon. Details can be found on the website WildDelaware.com.
The Live Brightly Benefit promises to be an enjoyable and motivational evening for those who attend. A highlight of the evening will be the inspirational documentary “Crazy Sexy Cancer,” created by photographer Kris Carr, a young woman who finds herself while looking for a cure for her cancer.
“People often ask me why I named the film ‘Crazy Sexy Cancer,’” Carr said. “The answer is simple: to challenge the perceptions, to poke fun and bring humanity to a disease that is still so misperceived and feared. No matter what happened, I refused to be saddled with the isolating stigma associated with cancer. Just because it had changed my life forever, didn’t mean that I had changed.”
Details about the film can be found on Carr’s website, www.crazysexylife.com
The evening event in Milton will include hors d’oeuvres and beverages. The auction also will include other photographs, jewelry, gift baskets and quilts made by Sussex County artists. Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased through the Tunnell Cancer Center.
There will be a limited number of tickets available; and, they can be reserved at the door. For more information, or to buy tickets, call the Tunnell Cancer Center at 302-645-3171.
