Rehoboth Elementary School’s PTO will again be sponsoring a National Young Readers Day event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, Nov. 14, at the school.
Schools across the country celebrate reading by participating in National Young Readers Day on the second Tuesday of November each year. This is an annual event that was cofounded in 1989 by Pizza Hut and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.
This day was created to recognize the joys and benefits of reading. Schools recruit local celebrities to read aloud a favorite children’s book to participating classrooms.
Local reading role models typically include local authors, officials, sports figures, public safety officers, parents and other guests from the public and private sector.
This year Rehoboth Elementary has participants including acclaimed mystery author Ed Dee, award-winning novelist Maribeth Fischer, internationally renowned photographer Kevin Fleming, WGMD’s Dan Gaffney, authors Nancy Lynch and Christina Weaver, local author Faye Jacobs, children’s authors Connie Sprenkle and Jeremy Shick, several members of the Rehoboth Beach Writers Guild, Delaware Beach Life publisher and writer Terry Plowman, Dr. John Ludwicki of Lewes Pediatrics, well-known local chef Matt Haley, tennis pro Marty Godwin, Nicola’s Joan Caggiano, Drexel Davison of Bad Hair Day, Susan McEnelly of Browseabout Books, former Disney television writer Amy Warick, and also representatives from the Cape Gazette, the Delaware Coast Press, Clear Space Productions, the Milton Theatre, the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Chamber of Commerce and the Rehoboth Beach Public Library.
Cosponsor Browseabout Books will be featuring books by the participating authors and others in the lobby of the school’s Main Building; this outlet is open for teachers, kids and parents to visit from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
In addition, a Free Write workshop for Rehoboth Elementary students in grades 2 to 5 will be offered by the Rehoboth Beach Writers Guild from 3 to 4:15 p.m. in the cafeteria in the Main Building, following the school day on Nov. 14.
Parents who wish their children to attend this after-school event should send in written permission to the school.
Parents must be available to pick up their child at 4:15 p.m. sharp from the cafeteria. Forms for this workshop will be sent home with Rehoboth Elementary children in grades 2-5 before Nov. 14.
