The Delaware Public Archives will open an exhibit at 1:30 p.m., Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11, based on the new book by Nancy E. Lynch titled “Vietnam Mailbag: Voices From the War 1968-1972.” The public is welcome to attend the opening reception and veterans are especially encouraged to join in this special event.
Beginning in 1968, Delaware servicemen and women stationed in Vietnam were invited to write to Lynch, a general assignment reporter for The News Journal. The column that eventually grew from these letters became known as Nancy’s Vietnam Mailbag. During the course of the five years that The News Journal ran the column, almost 900 letters were sent from Vietnam. The last Mailbag was published on Dec. 18, 1972.
Along with the opening of the new exhibit, Archives Director C. Russell McCabe will be accepting the ceremonial presentation of letters, documents and photographs to the people of Delaware. Later this year, the full collection will be officially donated to the Delaware Public Archives.
This exhibit will include select original letters along with excerpts and graphics from the publication. In addition, military artifacts from the Vietnam era will be on display. The exhibit is free to the public and will be on display through the end of May 2009.
The Delaware Public Archives is located at 121 Duke of York St. in Dover. The exhibit area is open from 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., Monday through Saturday. On Saturdays, the exhibit galleries are open until 4:45 p.m. The Archives is open most holidays but is closed on Sundays. For directions and other information, visit www.archives.delaware.gov
