The Sussex Family YMCA recently opened a fitness center aimed at keeping children physically active. Using interactive gaming equipment, the center provides children ages 8 to 13 with the opportunity to be more active while having fun.
“The kids who come in the fitness center are having such a good time they don’t realize they are exercising,” said Daniel Meloy, Sussex Family YMCA fitness director. “We’ve chosen equipment that makes exercise fun, especially for kids who would otherwise prefer to play video games or spend time in front of a computer screen.”
The center features the Dance Dance Revolution and game bikes and stationary bicycles that power a video game. The child controls the game with the handlebars and has to pedal to keep the game going.
The center also showcases 3 Kick, a game designed to increase agility, speed, balance and coordination.
More than 110 youths have used the center since it opened in mid-September. Plans for special programming to enhance the children’s experience in the youth fitness center are already under way.
The youth fitness center is open from 4 to 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday; from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday; from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday; and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sunday. For more information, call 302-296-9622.
