Cody Palmer of Dover sent home his second goal of the game with 4:02 remaining in the third quarter to give the visiting Dover Senators a 6-5 lead over defending state champion Cape Henlopen Tuesday, April 7, at Legends Stadium.
Palmer’s father, Bobby, had played for Cape in the early 1980s; his grandfather, Ted, was a member of the Cape school board and his grandmother, Carol, is a retired Cape kindergarten teacher.
“We played well, and then we just starting turning the ball over and not making our shots,” said Palmer.
Cape scored the final six goals of the contest with Chris Woodruff winning almost every face-off to emerge with an 11-6 win.
The Vikings were paced in the comeback victory by sophomore Andrew Scrutchfield’s four goals while Dan Steele tallied three scores. Chris Woodruff, Nick Priano, Kyle Norwood and Mark Tappan also scored for Cape.
Josh Martin scored four times for Dover while Palmer added a pair.
The Vikings had a shot advantage of 40-17 over the Senators. Dover goalie Andrew Minear had 15 saves; Cape’s James Cook had four.
Cape tuned up Milford Wednesday, April 1, going up 13-0 at the half and cruising home with a running clock for a 17-2 victory. The win was the Vikings’ 22nd straight since losing the season opener to Salesianum at the start of the 2008 season.
“We’re not Salisbury University and we don’t care about streaks,” said junior attackman Dan Steele after the Dover game.
“We’re just trying to get better and beat the team that’s in front of us.”
Cape goals were scored by Dan Steele (seven), Andrew Scrutchfield (three), Dalton Tyndall, Mark Tappan and John Young (two each) and Aaron Tartall and Kyle Norwood each with one. James Cook had four saves.
Cape will face Cold Spring Harbor of Long Island at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 10, at Drexel University.
Notes
Wally Szczerbiak, NBA basketball player for the Cleveland Cavaliers, attended Cold Spring Harbor High School. Actress Lindsay Lohan went there until her sophomore year. According to Wikipedia in the “Godzilla: The Series” episode “Lizard Season,” Cold Spring Harbor was used as the setting of the final battle between Godzilla and the Lizard Slayers, a trio of robots developed by the series’ recurring villain Cameron Winter. The Eagles were Nassau County champions the last three years and New York Class C state champions in 2006.
