The Hotbed Lacrosse camp landed in Rehoboth Monday, June 29, for a four-day camp that attracted more than 50 boys and 25 girls. “The camp offers the best instruction and a low coach-to-athlete ratio,” said Justin Smith from the field in Rehoboth as blue-black clouds rumbled to the north. “But what is up with the weather around here?”
In 2009 Hotbed Lacrosse offered camps in Mt.Airy, Bel Air, Ellicott City, Crofton and Kent Island, Md., and Rehoboth Beach.
According to Smith, who stars for the Washington Bay Hawks in the MLL professional lacrosse league, Hotbed Lacrosse is well known for its outstanding lacrosse camps with a “Southern California style.”
“In 2009 we have formed a new lacrosse club called HotStix, said Smith. “HotStix will have some of the best coaches in the Baltimore/Washington area. The HotStix are age group teams that play a five-game summer schedule.
The girls coaches were all from Salisbury University where they went 22-1 and lost to Franklin and Marshal in overtime 11-10 for the national championship. Sue Ackerman was an assistant coach on the 2009 Gulls squad. “We see the men’s and women’s games as maintaining separate identities,” Ackerman said. “There is talk of the girls wearing helmets but I don’t think you’ll ever see full-contact women’s lacrosse. “
