With the goal of helping children with asthma lead healthy lives, the Beebe Medical Center Respiratory Care Department has designed a free education program that will reach into the school classroom.
Respiratory therapists already have begun to contact local teachers and principals to get their support and approval so that they can visit classrooms and set up educational sessions with parents and school children. Parents also will have to approve of the program.
“Asthma is the most common chronic disorder that children suffer,” said Angela Lindale, a registered respiratory therapist and education coordinator for the Respiratory Care Department.
“There are about 3,037 children in Sussex County alone who suffer from asthma. It is so important to not only educate them and their parents, but their friends and their schools, as well, about how it can be controlled and how they can live normal lives.”
The free Breathe with Ease program includes educational sessions about medications, triggers and action plans.
It will support schools and families in their efforts to be prepared when a child suffers an episode so no one panics.
