The members of the Delaware Beekeepers Association invite the public to attend and participate in an “open hive” demonstration, lectures and a potluck luncheon on Saturday, Sept. 12, at Coleman’s Christmas Tree Farm, Route 9, Odessa. The event, which celebrates September as National Honey Month, is for anyone interested in bees and beekeeping.
It is a free public event. Attendees are asked to bring some food to share with others at lunchtime. There will be free hay wagon rides around Coleman’s Christmas Tree Farm for children - a family friendly and memorable experience. The program includes registration and networking with continental breakfast at 9 a.m. followed by welcoming remarks by Frank Marro, president of the Delaware Beekeepers Association.
Agriculture Secretary Ed Kee will talk at 9:45 a.m. about the importance of honeybees to vegetable crops in Delaware, and at 10:15 a.m., New Castle County beekeepers Bob Bauer and Bill Leitzinger will explain how to get started on the great hobby of beekeeping.
After a midmorning break, Robert Mitchell of the State Apiarist Plant Industries Section will present a honey extracting demonstration and honey taste testing at 11 a.m. A potluck lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., attendees are asked to bring food to share with others. No heating facilities are available.
An open hive demonstration will round out the event at 12:30 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to look inside a hive and see how it functions.
Bee veils will be supplied; beekeepers are advised to bring their own equipment. Water will be available for field sessions.
