The final score tells the only story that will be etched in history. Last Friday night, Oct. 2, at Ravens Stadium, Desmond Sivels rushed for three touchdowns and 303 yards while quarterback Jesse Swanson hit Justin Allen with a pair of scoring passes pacing Sussex Tech to a 35-12 win over the Vikings of Cape Henlopen.
The Ravens improve to 3-1 on the season and face archrival Sussex Central Friday night, Oct. 9, on the road. The Golden Knights lost to Milford 21-20 in double overtime while Tech’s lone loss was a 34-28 loss at Milford.
The Vikings got a pair of touchdown passes from Jack McPike, an 80-yard strike to John Boyer in the second quarter and a 17-yard toss to Ryan Goodwin in the fourth period as the Vikings fell to 1-3 on the season. Cape will host Caesar Rodney, the defending state champion, at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 9.
The Riders have lost two straight games to Salesianum and Loyola-Blakefield of Baltimore having yielded 92 points in two games but have scored an average of 26 points per game over four games.
The Vikings are giving up 28 points per game while scoring an average of 15.
Both Sussex Tech’s offensive coordinator Ron Dickerson and defensive coordinator Marty Cross, with 70 years of coaching experience between them, were quick to point out after the game that it sure didn’t feel like a 23-point Sussex Tech victory.
‘We just couldn’t get to McPike because of his quick release,” Cross said after the game. “Those two touchdown passes he threw were just great throws and that No. 15 [DeWayne Sheppard] is a heck of a weapon out there.”
Dickerson, a lifelong wing-T tormentor of defenses, was also impressed by Cape’s offense then mentioned Sivels of the Ravens saying, “He is a great one. It seems he can just turn it on whenever he wants.”
The score was 28-6 at halftime with each team scoring a single touchdown in the second half.
