Entry deadline for Letters About
Literature contest is set for Dec. 12
The Delaware Center for the Book and the Delaware Division of Libraries recently announced that the Letters About Literature annual contest is once again under way.

This nationally acclaimed program is available to all students in grades four to 12. Dozens of Delaware teachers have found Letters About Literature to be a valuable classroom project that reinforces Delaware’s curriculum content standards.

More than 500 Delaware public, private and home school students participated last year.

This signature program of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, in partnership with Target Stores, inspires young people to write to an author whose work has changed their view of themselves or the world.

First-place state-round prizes include a $100 cash prize, $50 Target gift card and a $100 reading promotion grant for the school or public library of each winner’s choice. National-round prizes include a $500 Target gift card and a $10,000 reading promotion grant for the school or public library of each winner’s choice.

Entries must be postmarked by Saturday, Dec. 12, and received no later than Tuesday, Dec. 22.

This year Delaware State Librarian/Delaware Division of Libraries Director Annie Norman, Delaware Public Archives Acting Director Jim Frazier and Delaware Government Information Center Director Greg Hughes will serve as Delaware’s judges.

“We are pleased to have these very accomplished people serve as our judges,” said Marie Cunningham, Delaware Letters About Literature coordinator.

“Their expertise, their deep appreciation for the written word and their broad perspective on communication makes them very qualified judges.

“They understand the power of words.”

For more information, contact Cunningham, 302-739-4748, Ext. 5119 or marie.cunningham@state.de.us.

Entry forms and guidelines can be found at lettersaboutliterature.org, or write to the national program director at lal@epix.net.
