African dance and drum company
to perform at Lewes library Oct. 31
The Sankofa African Dance & Drum Company will perform at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 31, at the Lewes Public Library. The company is a youth group, ages 8–19, that performs traditional African drum and dance pieces.

Through creative costuming, authentic dance and percussion instrumentation, Sankofa presents a production that is entertaining, educational and historical. Weather permitting, this program will be held in Stango Park, adjacent to the library. If the weather is inclement, the program will be held in the library meeting room. Children are encouraged to attend in their Halloween costumes for a special treat.

Sankofa was founded in 1995 to fill a void left by the absence of arts in the lives of Dover’s less advantaged youth. The group now performs before thousands each year at Dover’s African-American Festival and at festivals, reunions, schools, churches and Black History Month programs in the region. Sankofa performances are tailored to fit the occasion.

The program has played a significant role in making youth more aware of the value of the arts in their everyday lives. Reuben Salters, the company’s founder and director, was awarded a 2004 Delaware Governor’s Award for the Arts.

This program is free and open to the public and is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. This program is also supported by the Friends of the Lewes Public Library.
