The Coastal-Georgetown American Association of University Women began its 2009-10 season in September with a welcome back luncheon in Fenwick, and an Evening of Wine and Chocolate for new members. According to spokeswoman Sheri Borrin, the branch has 92 members who actively support the association’s mission of advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.
One of the ways the Coastal-Georgetown American Association of University Women (AAUW) fulfills this mission is by offering scholarships to local high school seniors and graduates of Delaware Tech who are continuing their education. Members of the Coastal-Georgetown chapter met Oct. 15, for a challenging Team Trivia Scholarship Fundraiser at the Rusty Rudder in Dewey Beach where they raised more than $700 toward local scholarships.
The chapter thanks the merchants who contributed prize items: 1776 Restaurant, Bad Hair Day?, Bethany Blues; Browseabout Books, Confucius Chinese Cuisine, The Greene Turtle, Grotto Pizza, Lotus Spa, Mariachi Restaurant, Monograms Unlimited-Vera Bradley, Nage, Rehoboth Yoga and Twila Farrell Fashions.
The chapter also sponsors a mentoring program in local schools and co-sponsors an Excellence in Science and Math Luncheon at the University of Delaware for 11th-grade girls throughout the state. The group holds monthly Notable Book Discussions in the Lewes and South Coastal libraries that are open to the public.
The next meeting will be held Thursday, Nov. 19, at Mariachi Restaurant in Rehoboth Beach, where Nicholas DiPasquale will discuss environmental issues in Delaware.
