Coastal Concerts to feature
Colorado Quartet Nov. 21 at Bethel U.M.
The Colorado Quartet – dubbed by the Seattle Times reviewer “the Fab Four” of chamber music – brings its energetic and passionate style to Coastal Concerts’ 2009-10 season at 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 21.

Coastal Concerts is a nonprofit organization promoting classical music appreciation in southern Delaware. All concerts are at the Bethel United Methodist Church fellowship hall, a handicapped-accessible venue on the corner of West Fourth and Market streets in Lewes.

The evening begins with Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Quartet in F Major, op.77, no.2,” a work that shows the composer at his best, toward the end of his career. Haydn has been called “the father of the string quartet,” and this work represents him at his most musically playful.

Johannes Brahms’ “Quartet in A Minor, op.51, no.2” is scheduled to follow. Throughout its four movements, the audience will be treated to Brahms’ favorite device, cross-rhythms that demonstrate the composer’s dramatic intensity.

The ”F Minor Quartet, op.80,” of Felix Mendelssohn will conclude the evening’s program. Written during a period of mourning and recovery following the untimely death of his beloved sister at age 41, the range of emotions from rage to lamentation and grief is echoed throughout. Tragically, this quartet was published posthumously, since Mendelssohn himself died less than six months after his sister, at age 41.

Concert attendees are invited to enjoy a post-concert “greet the artists” reception where they may chat with the Colorado Quartet’s players, including its founder. First-time concert-goers especially may be interested to learn that one member of the quartet is a North American-ranked “ultra runner,” and that three of the group play instruments that were crafted more than 250 years ago.

Tickets for each Coastal Concerts program are $20, with discounted admission available for series purchases. Youth ages 10 to 18 are given free admission at the door for themselves and one accompanying adult. Series tickets can be purchased online at coastalconcerts.org or by calling 888-212-6458.

Individual tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce, Lewes Gourmet and PUZZLES on Front Street in downtown Lewes.
