H1N1 vaccines to be offered in Cape schools
H1N1 vaccines will be given at Milton Elementary School Tuesday, Nov. 3. The vaccine is expected to be available in other schools in coming weeks, but the schedules have not been released.

Nasal-spray vaccine will be administered to public school students, with parental permission, this week. Injectable vaccine will be offered to older students in the near future, said state officials. It is part of a program coordinated by the Department of Public Health and the Department of Education.

Public health department spokeswoman Jennifer Wooleyhand said health officials are striving to have an equal presence in each district to limit the amount of illness among students. “We are going about this as carefully and equitably as possible,” she said.

Health and education officials are working with the number of parent permission slips received from each school and the amount of vaccine available, she said.

In some schools there was a very small response from parents, while in others, there was a great response. Wooleyhand said the schools in which fewer parents agreed to have their children vaccinated may be combined and the vaccine offered there in the same day. Other schools had large parental approval, she said.

“They are pairing up the amount of vaccine available to the response within the schools, while maintaining the same level of presence within each district,” said Wooleyhand.
The vaccination program will continue for some weeks, she said.
