The game was a test of toughness as Cape and St. Mark’s battled each other face-to-face and stick-to-stick for 60 minutes of tension-filled playoff field hockey Monday afternoon, Nov. 16, at Milford.
Cape emerged from the closely played, physical contest winning 1-0 as Kaci Coveleski sent home a pass off a corner from Jacki Coveleski and “Injector” Coveleski beat goalie Julie Collins with 9:54 left in the game.
Collins was a major factor in the game, stoning Cape time and time again, recording 20 saves as Cape put 30 shots on goal and had 20 corners.
“It was a tough game and we played much better in the second half, but we didn’t hit the ball solid like we usually do,” said Cape head coach Nicole Catanzaro after the game. “All our players looked a bit off, but this round is all about survival.”
Sussex Tech defeated Archmere 4-0 at Dover on a pair of goals by Kelsey Doherty and single tallies by Maxine Fluharty and Abby Atkins.
Cape will play Sussex Tech Wednesday, Nov. 18, at a site and time to be determined. T he Ravens lost to Cape in the regular season 2-1 - their only loss of the season.
St. Mark’s pressured Cape in spurts throughout the game as goalie Veronica D’Amico was credited with five saves, three in the final minutes, including a blocker save head high as the Spartans swarmed in front of the Cape cage.
