St. Paul’s plans Distant Neighbors
Fair Trade Festival Nov. 20-21
In support of the basic principles of fair trade, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Georgetown will host the 3rd Annual Distant Neighbors Fair Trade Festival from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 20, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 21.

Fair trade refers to the direct purchase of goods from people in developing nations.

This year, more diverse and affordably priced products from local as well as global artisans and farmers will be offered at economical fair trade prices.

An expanded entertainment program includes Bethany Beach resident Marco Hernandez playing music of the Andes and Seaford resident John Kisela singing holiday songs, folk songs and ballads.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day, a varied ethnic luncheon will be served in the Corner Café. On the menu are such items as “Rockin’ Moroccan Stew” and other homemade stews and soups, five other vegetarian and non-vegetarian choices, chili made by the St. Paul’s Chili cook-off winner, breads, beverages and desserts and an opportunity for take-out lunches, all for $5.

Festival proceeds do not benefit St. Paul’s; they benefit the Emergency Home Repair Project, a long-term program of the First State Resource Conservation and Development Council Inc., which serves low-income homeowners in Kent, Sussex and lower New Castle counties. Volunteers assist in eliminating housing conditions that present an immediate safety or health risk until more extensive work can be completed. Proceeds from the raffle of a 26-inch flat-screen HD LCD TV donated by Walmart in Georgetown will benefit youth scholarships. Festival proceeds also benefit the artisans who created the products and will provide information to further awareness of some of the economic and social challenges facing many people around the world and in local neighborhoods.

Fair trade items available include jewelry, clothing, household items, holiday decorations, books, toys, coffees and other foods, baskets and many other gift items.
