Two suspects remain at large following a Milton home invasion that sent two victims to the hospital.
The violent and brazen forced entry in a home where three friends gathered has left residents on edge in Shipbuilder’s Village complex, where the invasion took place.
One victim said she was playing video games with two friends when the attack occurred at about 10:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 17. Her identity is being withheld by the Cape Gazette out of concern for her safety.
The woman, 35, was visiting a 20-year-old man and 21-year-old woman, both renters of the single-family home.
The game was interrupted when the doorbell began continuously ringing, accompanied by urgent knocking. The victim said when the man answered the door, a suspect pushed it in, knocking the male resident to the floor. The two intruders demanded money and jewelry.
The older of the three victims said the intruders were male, wearing black-hooded sweatshirts and blue bandanas covering their mouths and noses. As the intruders pushed their way into the home, one suspect brandished a gun, forcing the three victims into a hallway.
The woman said she grabbed the gun as her two friends jumped on the intruder. As they wrestled, the second suspect was knocked to the floor, but he got up and fled the home.
The remaining suspect who had a gun had attempted to fire it, the victim said. She said she didn’t know if the gun was jammed or not loaded, but the intruder attempted to fire the weapon at her, she said.
She said the suspect hit her in the face with the gun, and she immediately felt blood coming from above her eye as she landed on the floor on one knee.
The male victim also struggled with the suspect, who hit him with the gun in the back of the head, an injury that required staples.
In the meantime, the younger woman grabbed a baseball bat, hitting the suspect as he approached her.
The older victim said the younger woman hit the suspect with two full swings on his back and again in his ribs. As he fled from the home, the suspect’s bandana came off.
He fell on the steps and again in the front yard. She said the suspect looked back twice.
Milton Police were contacted and responded to the home, bringing dogs with them in an attempt to follow the suspects.
Both suspects are described as being 16 to 19 years old and black, one about 5-feet-9 inches, the other roughly 5-feet tall, both of average weight.
The older female victim sustained an orbital fracture and required stitches above her left eye. The male victim received staples in the back of his head and stitches above his eye. Both were treated at Milford Memorial Hospital. The third victim had multiple contusions on her head but required no medical attention.
She also said police told her this was the second home invasion in Milton within a week. Had she known that, she said, they would’ve thought twice about opening the door.
Milton Police Chief William Phillips said the last known home invasion took place in 2007, when a Devonaire Jones broke into a Shipbuilder’s Village home. Jones pleaded guilty to rape in that incident, and, also in connection with a separate crime in Lewes, has been sentenced to 130 years in prison.
“We’ve beefed up policing more in that neighborhood,” said Phillips, in response to the recent attack.
Since the home invasion, the victims alerted their neighbors, who have been leaving porch lights on.
The victim said she wants to let everyone know that the attack was relatively early in the evening. She reminds others that the crime was bold and began with a knock on the door.
Milton police are still searching for the two intruders. Milton police ask anyone with information to contact call the department at 302-684-8547, or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-TIP-3333. Police are accepting anonymous calls.
